Besides material, what are the differences between vol 1 and vol 2? I see this was asked but is the only difference really just material?

The design is different as well. The Vol. 1 is a single piece of molded plastic with a retention spring in the card pocket. It allows you to take cards out of the pocket without having to worry about the other cards falling out. The Vol. 2 is a fabric pocket with no retention spring which also features a groove in the back where you can stick a credit card to act like a kickstand.
