WIDE with Pride. Excellent shoe for the price.
I am looking for a good pair of waterproof trail runners and these are the winner! In the past I've worn minimalist shoes in the winter with thick socks to keep warm and plastic bags over my socks to keep dry. Creating a handmade waterproof cast over my feet can feel time consuming and somehow demoralizing. I'm looking for something a little more congenial... so that if it's wet and rainy or cold with an inch or two of snow, I don't have any excuses. I have already discarded Solomon's SPEEDCROSS 4 GTX on the basis that it's essentially too rigid.Shoes are usually too narrow in the toe box for me but I didn't realize my feet were so wide until I put these on for the first time. I also tried Columbia Men's Redmond Mid Waterproof Wide Hiking Boot with a 2E size and the Columbia's are snug and heavy compared to these. My first impression is that these are pretty plain looking, really nothing special in terms of style. They are fairly light weight. They have pretty good flexibility throughout the whole shoe. Upon putting them on, they first felt loose, but comfortable. They also felt a bit awkward...not sure how else to explain it. There's something comforting about having a minimalist shoe hugging my foot, but a more substantial shoe, like these Dexter's, seem to need a bit more air space inside the shoe itself. Upon pressing down with a thumb from the outside of the shoe, everything feels snug enough. My toes are not smashed and feel just...comfortable.I took these on a test run with a pair of low cut running socks. In mid winter, there would be enough room for thick socks. The awkwardness feeling goes away on the trail, as these shoes are highly maneuverable, and indeed living up to the name, these Hi-Tec shoes feel highly technical, lending good control on technical trails. My only gripe is that I can feel a seam along the pinky side of my foot where the insole meets the upper. After over an hour of running the seam felt noticeable and on a longer run I'm sure it would begin to feel distracting... and maybe painful if running for hours on end.Otherwise, everything felt natural enough. There is plenty of cushion to soak up any sensation of gravel or crushed stone. Fore foot strikes, mid foot strikes, hiking and walking all felt pretty good. So far I've only taken these on one run and have not encountered much water, so I cannot yet speak to the water proof functionality. I will update after I have some miles on them.Overall these Hi-Tec Dexter's are hitting hard in a market dominated by $100+ shoes.

A High Quality Shoe for Hiking
I have relied on Dexter products for many years, and I have been very satisfied with these shoes. They fit well, and the padded collar and tongue provide warmth and comfort. The wide heels ensure stability and the reinforced toes reduce wear. Although they are flexible, their soles are thick enough to provide cushion when hiking over irregular rocky surfaces. The manufacturer claims these shoes offer “multi-directional traction,” and the soles, which consist of relatively soft black synthetic material and harder angular blue elements, seem to justify this claim. I have delayed my review of these shoes until I have had several months to evaluate their performance. I find that they give good traction, except on ice and mud, and they seem to be very durable. I have hiked over 200 miles on a variety of surfaces--boulders, rocky trails, coarse gravel, and pavement, but mainly sandy clay—and the soles show very limited wear. Judging by their appearance, they should be good for another 300-400 miles. Get a pair of these and you are ready to hit the trail.P.S. After over 500 miles of hiking, these shoes show very limited wear (see photograph). They are still structurallly sound. However, they are not "waterproof" in the sense that term might suggest. They can handle very shallow water. But a step into 2 inches or more of water will saturate these shoes, and, depending on the situation, they may need several days to dry out.

Might want to look for something better
I've gone through a bunch of Hi-Tec shoes and boots; generally a good product at a fair price. But i'm disappoint in this last pair of shoes. They feel cheaply made - not so much the material or the construction, but the in the fit. Both, left and right, are uncomfortable - mainly on the top area and no adjustment of the laces will correct the ill fit. Sadly the left's poor fit is not in the same spot as the right's, as one might expect. Pretty sure my feet are the same size. Why is one so tight towards the toes and the other shoe fit poorly much higher up. I suspect, cheap inconsistent overseas manufacturing.

Returned
First the shoes were too big for a size 10 and second they was poorly constructed with uneven and limited padding in the foot bed. I returned the shoes an ended up with a pair of Columbia's with which I seem to have the best luck.

Good solid shoes
Good solid shoes. I wear size 14 and have a arthritic big toe and these fit really well. Not too tight in the toe , not sloppy. Theses are my all day wear for work and walking.

Great Work Shoes
My husband loves these shoes. He walks 5-10 miles a day at his job and says his feet doesn't hurt anymore at the end of the day. I will definitely buy these for him again.
