I had this book years ago, before the days of buying online, when I was doing civil war reenactment...a "friend" liked it also so she stole it. Glad to have found it again.

I purchased this book to use as a reference for making historical costumes for doll figures, but it wasn't as useful as I thought it would be. Although it contains photos and illustrations, most of the book is text. The photos are black and white stills of ancient artwork and artifacts depicting historical garments, and people dressed in costume reproductions; many of the photos are not clear and are very dark. The book also contains drawings of patterns for recreating some of the costumes. I found these a bit difficult to decipher, although what works on a full-size person doesn't always work for a doll since one must always be aware of scale and strive to avoid the bulk created by too many layers of fabric. Except where noted, no hint of colors were given for even the most common garments of a particular era. A few colored illustrations throughout would have broken up the monotony of the written descriptions. For me, the biggest shortcoming of the book was that the nationalities I was interested in were not included. In conclusion, this book is not as complete as it could have been and should only be considered a last resort when researching a particular historical costume.

This book was a gift to my son's girlfriend. I have copy bought many years ago. That was an excellent reference. I know she will love it too.

Definitely a GREAT reference for costume design and just general curiosity of what people wore. Has many patterns and guides for how to actually make stuff. Highly recommend!

This book is based in part on Racinet's "Le Costume Historique," one of the first encyclopedic reviews of costumes worn throughout the ages and around the world. this book includes other sources as well. The text is concise but very informative. I especially appreciate the extensive Glossary. I really enjoy reading historical fiction and biographies, and so this is a very useful reference in helping me imagine what the characters are wearing.

I enjoyed this book a lot, and have found much of the information helpful. Some of it has to be taken with a grain of salt, but for its time, it is a good book.

this is more of a book to read about fashion with not enough images. From the cover and given that it's a Dover publication, I was expecting more images.

This was somewhat helpful in my study of vintage clothing. It is not as helpful for my needs as The Dictionary of Costume and Fashion.

This book has a very comprehensive history of how clothing development happened, it also has sketches if you want to cos play.

Molto utile come primo approccio per la ricostruzione dell'abito storico. Contiene modelli di varie epoche e civiltà. Meno indicato invece se si vuole approfondire un solo periodo storico.

L'oggetto che ho acquistato è arrivato entro la data di consegna stimata quindi il servizio è stato molto buono. oggetto in buono stato nonostante fosse usato!

パターンとイラストレーションとありますが、図解であったり、服の型紙であったり、という絵が多いです。情報量は英文によるものがほとんどですので、服装資料として絵が欲しい方にはおすすめしません。ただし、イラストの点数は少ないのですが、型紙で分析してあるので、歴史衣装の構造を知りたい方、英文が読める方には資料になるのかもしれません。
