Well, it is a HEAT SINK after all - it does its job by passively pulling heat off the object it's placed on!I needed a HEAT SINK for a 3 1/2" external hard drive that I have plugged into my computer.The drive isn't in an enclosure but simply sitting on a bunch of stuff.However my monitoring program CfrystalDiskInfo would sometimes warn me that the temperature rises to 50C and then I would have to manually cool it down.So the very simple and efficient solution was to buy this aluminum heat sink block and place it on top of it to draw off the heat. I don't even need to put a fan on top of it, and it's humming away at a normal 43C
