will this upgrade from the G2 version so that the new maps will work with it or will I need a whole new kit (unit plus Transducer)

Only the G3 unit is upgradable, not the G2,I finally wrnt with the G3 units because of that, now I have 3. G 3 units on my boat,

Does it have an anchor alarm?

Yes it does. You have to change the mode from Angler to Custom and then in the alarm settings under Drift Alarm specify how large a radius you want it to warn you about when it leaves this area. I believe it uses the GPS to denote drift.

How long is the transducer cable?

20ft, and they do have extentions if you need more length
