Nikon D300 Digital Field Guide

Not as good as the D200 book by David Busch.
I purchased this book by the cover design, wrongly assuming that it was another book by David Busch. It's not, and not nearly as good. But for the price (used, from one of the Goodwill stores selling on Amazon), it's not bad. Busch also has a huge D300 reference book; it is great and is often available used on Amazon.

This is a very nice field guide for the Nikon D300-a great but complicated camera
J.D. Thomas has written a great field guide for the Nikon D300. Like all prosumer digital cameras the manuals are difficult to read and offer few tips to overcome the endless menu's. The manuals have tiny text and poor illustrations. These field guides are great to help you get up to speed quickly. I must say that the Nikon manual is not too bad compared to some of the others I have read. It is very complete and you can find details fairly quickly once you understand the basics of the camera. I like the field guides for getting started though, for the shortcuts and tips that are not in the manual.

A great book by an outstanding author!
This book is a great companion to go with your Nikon D300. It is well illustrated and well written. I own several other versions written by the same author for my other Nikon DSLR cameras. A great book by an outstanding author!

HARDLY DIFFERENT FROM THE MANUAL
The way this book was written was hardly different from the manual, i. e., I, myself could have written it. What I was expecting was a little insight from the author's expertise and I didn't get it. I certainly was disappointed in the pictures and old tips that I could get anywhere on the net for free. The only thing that excited me about this book was the price and free shipping.

great book for someone just entering the Nikon world
great book for someone just entering the Nikon world. Many photographic books specific to make/model describe the menu system and how to configure a camera out-of-the-box, but this book provides much more. There is a chapter dedicated to lenses and understanding the lens identifiers along with personal experience of common lenses on the market. This is worth the price of admission alone for a first time buyer looking to outfit a new DSLR camera.

Nikon D300 Camera body
I found this camera very easy to opporate, even with many multi-function buttons. Having used a F3 for most of the last 20 years and a D50 for the last couple. Everthing just felt normal and well built. I also purchased the battery pack, as I pefer to use AA batteries to power the camera. I'm more than happy with the purchase and expect this camera to last me for many years to come.I'm experimenting with the various formats (currently RAW) and having a blast using the different features of Photoshop, shooting still lifes in the studio and spring flowers. I no longer currently make my living with Photography, but I would feel comfortable taking a couple D300's to any shoot.

Better than any tutorial DVD.
As mentioned elsewhere, I am in the process of converting from film to digital photography and there are certain aspects which I have found quite daunting. Altogether, I have purchased several books and tutorial DVDs on the subject as that process of conversion continues and this product is one of the best.Having already worked my way through this particular title (with camera in hand) I found this book was able to provide instruction which was far superior to any of the tutorials I had also studied. Basically, if you are new to the Nikon D300, this book will provide an excellent grounding.Beginning with an introduction to the camera, the book is then carefully laid out in the best possible way where the author meticulously builds on the information imparted so far until the structure of the book is complete. Part 1 contains an explanation of the many and varied facets of this outstanding camera and are far too numerous to list here. Part 2 then expands on this knowledge by giving examples of how to create great images and includes a chapter on working with light and other aspects of the art.Altogether a complete product for the complete photographer.NM

OK if you are new to Digital
This book is ok if you are new to digital, but I'm assuming that if you are spending this amount you have at least used a DSLR before. If not then you are more than likey to use the D300 on Program all the time. The D300 has many advanced techniques that are hidden within the menues. This book is just an extendsion of the manual that comes with the camera. It does not explain in detail all these differnt items and how they affect the outcome. It doesn't tell you that the AE lock does not affect the flash. (You need flash lock FV) It does not tell you that you can change each white balance with amber and blue tones by rotating a dial. It doesn't expalin that fill in flash works best in rear curtain sync. If you want to use your D300 to its best then this is not the book. It does not demostrate how to manage the picture controls very well. If you want an expanded manual then yes this is the book. I suggest that you look for a photographic book that is written with the D300 in mind, but shows you how to take better pictures by using the camera to its full. If you use a seperate speedlight then its a must to buy a book that shows you how to use wireless flash as the camera can act as a wireless flash commander.
