The quality and comfort I expected.
Excellent product as I always expect from New Balance shoes. These fit as I expected them to, not too big or too small. I have to buy shoes a half size larger to fit my prescription orthopedic insoles. There was no problems with using them in this shoe. Simply loosen the laces a bit and the shoe expands nicely to fit a foot now taller due to the insoles. You don't even have to take out the stock foam insole to make room. If you have to wear these as I do then you know what I'm talking about. There is good cushioning all around the shoe with plenty of air holes for breathability making them extremely comfortable to wear all day. Although this pair of 840s, and maybe all 840s, are made in Vietnam, I remain confident in my purchase due to New Balance's company policy requiring at least 25% of their product is made in the USA. I will buy this shoe again if they are still making this model when mine eventually wear out.

What I Hoped For
I have only worn them to the gym to work out and walk 37 minutes (2.15 miles) on the treadmill 3-4 days a week. I also add an an orthotic to the shoe that was custom made. The shoe feels good. The 2E gives width at the front and my feet don't feel cramped. I haven't tried wearing them all day. That will happen soon. They certainly aren't the most attractive sneaker but they work and give me a break from my blue sneakers. The 909's I bought from a New Balance store and the sales person insisted that I didn't need the 2E, saying the specialty shoe store I used to go to didn't know what they were talking about. She simply went up a half size and while I like the sneaker looks, my feet always feel cramped in width. I've gotten used to it, wearing them only to the gym, but now I am more comfortable wearing the size I am supposed to wear. The New Balance franchise store lost my future business and I will buy online henceforth.

Good quality, comfortable shoe.
Have been wearing these New Balance MW840's for about a week now. So far I've been quite satisfied.Pros: These seem to be a well constructed shoe, with a very soft leather upper and full "Abzorb" cushioned sole. I've noted very good impact absorption - particularly in the heal. The leather upper is supple, and is perforated to let your feet breathe a little. I ordered a 9-4E, and sizing is pretty accurate. I've tried several pairs of New Balance 4E's over the past couple years, and they have all seemed to be more like 2E's of other brands I've tried - such as Merrell, Sketchers, Columbia, etc. The width on these MW840"s is truly a 4E. There is plenty of width and height in the toe box. The insoles are a little thin, but do seem to offer a dense and effective cushion. They are removable, and there is definitely room to add a more substantial insole if you desire. The outsoles are not prominently "lugged" but still have good traction. They do pick up very small pebbles, but this is not too much of a problem.Cons: The shoes are not the most stylish around. A bit "orthopedic" in appearance, to me they kind of resemble the bottom half of snow boots. I ordered the brown version. This is a dark brown, and in the sun they show a bit of a cordovan tint. Not unattractive, but a little different. The shoe is a little wide in the heal, and allows minor slippage there. I'm experimenting with heavier socks and different lacing schemes, and hope that solves the issue. The shoes don't offer a great deal of "energy return" or rebound -- such as you get with a good pair of running shoes.Overall, these are good, comfortable shoes for casual walks and general use. If you need a shoe for power walking or more of an exercise application, you might want to check out something else.

A good choice for walking shoes!
These are solid shoes. You get what you pay for. I paid $99.They have the look and feel of therapeutic-orthopedic shoes. The size and bulk of these shoes are substantial if you're expecting regular "tennis shoes".The sole inserts that come with the shoes are not very good. Way too thin with very minimal arch support. These shoes definitely call for a decent pair of orthotic inserts. If you're already committed $99 into walking shoes, it's worth the extra hassle of getting inserts. But the build and quality of the shoe is on point. They are comfortable, supportive and stylish.

Great shoe
These fit 1 size small as all New Balance shoes seem to. Just buy a size bigger and you will be fine. I wear the 2E width and they fit my wide foot great. I would buy them again. When people say they are heavy.....only compared to a light weight running shoe. For walking these are perfect. Lots of support and cushioning, I wear orthotics and they fit in the shoe perfect once I removed the insole.

Love it! I hope they stay the same!
I realize that vendors want to change their product to keep things fresh. But sometimes a guys just wants to wear the same shoe for 5 or 10 straight years!I used to wear an 827. Then an 828. Then a 900 something. Now this 840. Can't I just have the same dang shoe?My concern is that not all 800 and 900 series shoes are made equal. Some have cheaper materials than others. That is the trouble with online purchasing. It's tough to evaluate quality. In this case, these are well made shoes. I expect them to last a while. I have 3 previous New Balance pairs of shoes in various states of usability. I choose the right pair of shoes depending on the likely hood of getting them more messed up. Reserving my newest pair (these shoes) for only when I don't expect bad weather. I expect these to last me a good year using this technique. :)

Reasonably supportive, high quality, astoundingly ugly shoe.
They're comfortable enough, though they are a bit narrower than I expected. They seem well made, and I've had several pair of a different model of New Balance in the past, so all of the above is expected. Over time, these shoes tend to remain supportive, especially for people who supinate a bit, as I do.They do have one thing going against them, though. These might be the butt ugliest shoes I've ever owned. I mean, they don't look super sexy in the photographs here, or anything, but in real life they're this square nosed, stumply little monstrosity on the bottom of my legs. You know how a pug or a bulldog has that super ugly, smashed in face that is so absolutely awful it is cute? These are like that, except without being cute.If they hold true to my previous NB purchases, I expect they'll last a good, long time. So they still get 4 stars. One off for hideousness.

Great, lightweight, casual shoes.
I wear a 15D, and was amazed with how light this shoe was before I opened the box. I wear full foot orthotics due to a number of procedures over the years, and find that the SL-2 last of the shoe accommodates them very well. The flat brown color makes for good casual shoe. These feel light and very comfortable. I will update my review when I have a better feel for long term durability. I have worn NB since the early 1980โs and so far, these meet my expectations.
