Is this cotton or polyester? Manufacturers website says cotton, but reviews and images of the product tag shows polyester.

It’s cotton fabric with polyester fibers. It’s a cotton on the front almost like a linen and the back is a soft lush poly fleece with ugh crinkle inside

I know the instructions say not to immerse in water, but why? What would happen to it? Has anyone tried machine washing it?

We have machine washed it with a load of clothes and let it air try for a day or two prior to giving it back to baby. Cleaned really well and seems fine!
