Can the bag carry heavy items

The tote does support a heavy load. For example, I use the tote for everyday and aside from the usual items (wallet, notebook, keys, personal items etc.) I also carry my laptop and external harddrive in it. Everything fits nicely and so far (4 months of everyday use) I have had no issues with the addition of heavy items. The straps do not show any signs of strain and the bag has held up quite nicely.

Can the large tote stand upright on its own?

Great bag other than the corners bending which prevents usage. This is not with a heavy load.

The quality is great. The leather isn't cheap or easily scratched. The lining is a strong, silky material. The handles seem durable and well attached. there are no issues with stitching or loose strings.
