Add this to any french press! (dramatically reduces the chloresterol producing oil in coffee)
It's well known that using paper filter in making coffee reduces the bad oil in coffee that produces LDL cholesterol. A test of men who made coffee each morning found that those who used metal screen filters had 10% higher cholesterol than those using paper filter methods. A chemical test of the coffee made in a number of methods found that using a paper filter reduced this particular bad oil in the coffee by 97.5%. (The expensive fine mesh filters designed to accomplish same reduced by 50%). However, who doesn't like coffee from a french press? The solution is to use one of these paper filters and just put it between your two screens or below the single screen if that's what your unit has. I have found this ESPROPF-100, "12 oz" to be the perfect one to use on four out of five of my french presses. When you put it on, you punch the bottom screw piece through the center of the filter as you put your filter assembly together. WHEN you go to clean your french press after making coffee, you can see the extra oil down above the grounds (assuming you didn't press the coffee down to a puck (a bad idea with french press in general). Some people claim paper filters impart taste to coffee or put other matter into the coffee. Easy solution just rinse or soak filter in cup of water first. I've tried it both ways and can't tell the difference. Also, these ESPRO filters are very clean (read their material). This works on any french press. There are many good french press brands out there with lots of feature variations. I do like the vacuum double wall steel ones that use two screens, but this filter method works on anything. Hint from all the blind tasting competitions around the world: warm up the press first w. very hot water, rinse paper filter in the water if desired. then put course to medium-course coffee grounds in. Add water at @170d F. Stir 30 seconds. 95%+ of the extraction is during this stirring. Push plunger down in stages or slowly. Finish making the coffee in 60-90 seconds. The coffee stops extracting (i.e. brewing) once you plunge it. Letting the coffee sit before plunging increases the bitterness significantly. If you like bitter coffee (as some people do), then let it steep 4 minutes before plunging. Do not squeeze or press the grounds at the bottom with the plunger-filter. If the coffee comes out too strong or gets cool after sitting, add a little 200 degree water to it. This paper filter addition to the french press also reduces the contact between the brewed coffee above and the grounds and sludge below, so that your coffee will keep nicely made in the french press longer. The sludge and grounds always get increasingly bitter and off-tastes over time after plunging. Exposure of your coffee to this is one of the negatives of just using a single screen with wide mesh in a french press. Incidentally, these paper filters are reusable in this technique, although I have never done it. If you rinse out or soak in water you can use again the next day, and again... Tests have shown that one of these paper filters can be reused 20 times. Good to know in a pinch, I guess, but I'll let others try that. Enjoy healthy coffee!

Keeps the grounds out of your mouth
Most French coffee presses warn you to use only coarse ground coffee in the press. While they have screens on the "baskets," very small grounds often may their way through to your cup -- and then to your mouth. Using these filters keeps the grounds out of the coffee. They only work with the two-basket French press, though. If your coffee press has only on basket, these won't work for you.
