Where is the heating element? I read that it is concealed. Is it in the base or built in the pot?

The electricity contact from the base heats the bottom of the pot. The bottom of the pot has the most heat. There is no open element.

Can I cook rice in it especially when traveling ?

I would guess that you could use the water to cook instant rice separately. However, I don’t think I would cook rice inside of this kettle. I Again, I would guess that cooking inside of the kettle would damage it.
