My favorite fighting knife! I love it!
I love this knife! It has a razor sharp double edged blade that is 8.25" long. It is a great knife for stabbing and slashing and would be my go to in a knife fight. The handle has a sub-hilt finger notch so that your grip cannot slip when your hands get wet or bloody. The blade is premium quality AUS 8 steel that stays sharp and is very strong and will not break or bend. It's my son's favorite knife as well (I bought him one for Christmas) and he not only takes it with him for hunting, he also likes to carry it everywhere for protection. It's very scary if someone comes at you with a knife like this, and it will certainly get the job done if used correctly. These were originally used by officers in WWI and by the CIA because it is the ultimate killing knife. It comes with a nice Kydex Hard sheath as well, which is necessary to safely carry such a big, sharp, double-edged, deadly knife. Cold Steel makes the best knives for the best price. I highly recommend this one!

Great unique knife
This is a well designed knife. It is very large but incredibly light and plenty strong for what it's designed for. It is not a bush knife for bush crafting, wood working, or opening boxes. The sheath needs to have some material removed in my opinion if one is to be able to execute a comfortable, secure draw, and this is easy to do. Knife is well ground and very sharp. The sheath is ok but I'll be looking for a custom leather one. The sub grip design on this affords extreme control over the knife. A real bargain for the money. I own a tremendous lot of military knives but this one is uniquely engineered, embracing concepts old and new. It's actually incredible. May Lynn Thompson forever design great weapons. No one is better in my opinion.

Incredible Bowie
This is an exceptional knife. I wanted something that I could use to defend myself against dogs, and looked at some of the Dbad bowies and other cold steel knives. Everyone loves massive mini-swords until they have to carry it all day, every day, pulling their pants down and slapping their knees with every step. This knife is incredibly lightweight, you barely even notice it’s there. I got some of the clips that cold steel makes and they hold it securely on my belt. The handle profile resembles the lozenge shape of the fairbairn sykes dagger which helps if you’re grasping it like an ice pick, screwdriver, or saber grip. I was a little apprehensive about the hand guard being rubber and the little half guard, but they’re sturdy and don’t interfere with maneuvering the handle or drawing it. People who have never used knives in combat have a wealth of opinions about how it wouldn’t stop a massive chop from another blade. Knife fights usually don’t look like the 3 musketeers fencing.I know cold steel likes to use the same blade for multiple different styles of knife, this has the stereotypical Bowie knife clip point, but it’s fully double edged so it being grabbed isn’t an issue and the thrust penetrating is incredible. This isn’t a camping knife, a butcher knife, or anything like that. It’s really for just one thing and I think it’s the best I’ve found for that. It has enough mass for a slicing cut and great for thrusting, the original use of the Bowie knife.Very reasonable price too.

Overall Good
Fine blade, it's not for bushcraft, it's a fighting knife. Some reviewers don't understand English, they're not saying that it's made in Japan, they're saying it's Japanese Steel. It's sharp on both sides, the sheath is good, good retention. My only complaint is the handguard, it's to flimsy. I purchased about four different knives before sticking with this one. Including 200 300 dollar ones

Really nice knife
Been wanting one for a while but until Texas passed it's knife freedom act, carrying a double- edged knife was kind of iffy. Really a nice, very sharp and light weight fighter with a nice secure scabbard. Very nice grip. Not heavy enough for it to be a good camp knife but perfect for what it's designed for. Only wish the guard was black steel instead of hard rubber. Come on Cold Steel, that would not have cost that much more. Great, nicely built knife for the price point though.

Subhilt fighter
Well balanced and light. This is the famous knife that a man in Africa killed a Cape buffalo with. It was attacking his father and he stabbed it in the side. Video is online. Sharpened on both sides. Grippy handle. When you hold it, you know this is not an ordinary knife, it’s a refined weapon.I own literally over a thousand knives and if I had to choose one to defend myself, this would probably be my first choice.

Great knife...horrible sheath
First off....a word about the sheath. Throw it out if you plan to carry this knife. Invest in a high quality leather sheath that has ambidextrous carry, loose draw and a high tension snap. The secure-ex is the worst possible combination of insecure and hard to draw. Worse, it's clearly designed for right handed top down belt carry. A knife this size is realistic to carry horizontal along the small of your back. The snap is too loose to easily open and the sheath doesn't hold the knife securely without it. Since the issue is one you will live or die on, and more important than the actual knife, I thought I should mention it up front. The knife is the exact opposite of the sheath. About as close to an ideal combat knife as you can get. The more formal training you have (or perhaps the less) the more you will appreciate this knife. The knife is sharp. So what. Any reasonable piece of steel, with correct training and technique in sharpening a knife will hold a good edge. That's why I own $1k sharpening system. If I can't put this level of edge on it, it's trash. Cold Steel is excellent at pre-sharpening the blade and the OSS is no exception. The steel is important. I can grind the edge flat and then build and polish it up myself, over and over again, if necessary. The results are repeatable and reliable. Good steel. But where this knife really shines is the balance and design of the grip. This is an excellent reason you might want this knife as opposed to other knives of equal quality.

Lots of bang for the bucks.
For the price you’re getting a great knife and deal. Was very surprised at how light and how sharp it was out of the box. WARNING: Both edges are extremely sharp, out of the box. I oiled it up with my special lube, a combination of Mobil1 and Lucas Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer, followed by a coating of Frog Lube. I came up with this recipe when I was stationed in Sitka, Alaska. It gets 140 inches of rain a year and can play heck with blued OR stainless steel weapons.I then took it to my leather strap that gave it a razor sharp edge. Applied another coat of the lubes to the edge.Took some old towels and hung them up for some slicing practice. I was using a figure 8 pattern, then stabbing the towels in vital areas. The sharpened edge sliced it with ease, not so for the duller edge. Took some old couch pillows and placed cardboard in between the pillows, then taped them together for 3 pillows and 2 pieces of thick cardboard. With very little effort the knife went through all 5 pieces with ease. I then replaced the cardboard with some old paneling. Once again the blade went through with ease. Last try was thrusting the knife into the rig, then gave it a good rip and it did enough damage to be lethal. Not a scientific drill, but it gave me trust into the knife that I would feel comfortable using it for SD.

Fast, Light Weight Fighter.
A typical Cold Steel quality knife. The kraton handle allows good solid, secure grip and is even stronger with the sub hilt handle configuration. This knife is sharp out of the box, but of course some users aren't happy with a factory grind unless it's sharp enough to split the atom with. The blade is sharpened on top as well, putting it in the dagger class, be aware this knife although it is large is very light weight, making it a fast and maneuverable fighter. This is a knife that can fill more than one role, so completing some camp chores would not be a problem, but keep in mind you cannot baton with this knife, as it has no spine. The primary function of this blade is combat, it's a fighter that won't weigh you down when you're already carrying enough gear. The knife comes in a Cold Steel Securex type Kydex sheath, that you can tie to your leg as there are holes and slots for that and you can also attach a small bag, to carry other necessary items. I give the Cold Steel OSS (Office of Strategic Services, what became the CIA) knife five stars, it's perfectly designed for what it is expected to be used for, which is combat. This is a knife you can count on when needed, it's well made, sharp, beautifully designed, light weight, extra strong grip, and cuts both ways to Sunday, you can't go wrong if a fighter is what you're looking for.
