Killing Lions: A Guide Through the Trials Young Men Face

Tremendous resource for men of any age
It was very special to be able to 'participate' in a conversation between a son and a father as they chatted about the key matters that impact a man's heart.Sam, the 25 year old, recently married and wanting some everyday wisdom on how to approach marriage, his vocation, his faith, friendships, and how to cherish his wife provides the context. His dad, John, asks as many questions as he 'listens' to Sam and provides his views based on his experience as a 53 year old. Being a trained counsellor and coaching men in life provides John with greater depth as he is able to relate other mens experiences in addition to his own.If you've read John's other books much of the content will not be new but being a witness to their conversation provides greater clarity and practical insight.Particular highlights for me were Chapters 8 (A Few Questions about God) and 10 (Racing Toward the Unknown). Reading John share how he came to realise Jesus really is the way, the truth and the life is a very powerful witness. Then in the final chapter he raises a core question for all men: will I remain open to fathering? The book also includes three of the Eldredge prayers: The Daily Prayer, Prayer of Guidance and Sexual Healing. All very useful to add to one's prayer arsenal.I also bought the accompanying journal which enables the reader to explore each chapter on their own terms plus provides practical tips on additional reading, movies to watch, and questions to ask other men. It's a fabulous resource and I'd encourage everyone to buy it and work through it as you read the book.

A Quintessential Read for Young Men and Their Fathers
John Eldredge has once again written an insightful and timely book, this time directed at young men entering the adult world. Often listless and wandering, with no foundations in thought and wisdom, raised in a world where they are mentored by peers rather than elders, is it any wonder that it takes decades for men (and women) to find their way and purpose? It is a timeless issue, but has become even more prevalent has men have been told to rebel against old ways, only to find the social engineers of the world have only led them into emptiness. The Eldredges remind men of the trials they will face — the ones they cannot avoid in becoming men — and in the process show that those who try to redefine men and women are doomed to failure. The biological design of men and women cannot be changed; when embraced, it's wildly successful; when we try to change it, failure is the only result. See also Wild at Heart, Epic, The Way of the Wild Heart, and All Things New (all by Eldredge).

A Necessary Read for Young Men
I'm Jenifer's husband, David, and a longtime fan of John Eldredge and his writing. I just finished the book yesterday, having been sent an advance copy. This book contains a critical message very much needed for today's unfathered young man. These 15 to 30-year-olds are looking for direction while acting like they have their act together. But instead of rising up into the roles and responsibilities of manhood, they secretly flounder from fad to fad, trying desperately to figure life out. Hence the 20-something adolescent who takes on the vestiges of manhood all the while hiding from challenges that might expose him for the unfinished man-boy that he is. John and Sam address these issues in the context of a father-son conversation that every young man, including myself, a man about to turn 50, wishes he could have with his father. Career, dating, marriage, purpose, politics, social issues all come into better focus as Sam exposes his internal struggles, the struggles that all of us face as men. John responds as a wise and informed father, who has himself been fathered by God. The book is full of hope and direction!I have purchased 20 of these books and will pass them out to the men I have been entrusted with. I can highly, highly recommend this latest book and all of the books penned by the Eldredge family of writers.

A knife
I am a 26 year old man, married 3 years last August and have a 6 week old daughter. I have never felt so "called out" and depended on in my life. The search for validation and to know I am not blowing it has never felt more real than now.How do I know I am making the right choices? Am I loving my wife and daughter well? What is my purpose and am I missing it?Why does God have me in the job I am in? Am I alone in all of this? I feel needy. These have been a few of the questions that I have had in my young adult life. Killing Lions touches on every one. It takes the pressure of of having it all together. I have a Father, really. He knows me, sees me and loves me.To all the guys out there wrestling and searching, this book is a knife when you're caught in a net.page 9. (John)This is time for revolution, and one of the great wonders of Christianity is the idea that you are born into your times, to set your times aright...Fredrick Buechner believed that, "The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the worlds deep hunger meet."Thank you Sam for asking the questions. Thank you John for answering them.Thank you Jesus for validating who I am and giving me a new identity.

Great lessons for young men and perhaps for older men ...
I've read Wild at Heart, and was excited to get my hands on this audiobook. Great lessons for young men and perhaps for older men to learn how to guide the young men. Paired with their YouTube videos, it helped to illustrate some of the chapters, so this is a great tool to use as a mentoring tool.
