Love it
This is a really unique product. It is weird that it is missing the "greatest hits" of the Genesis but makes sense in the context that this is meant as an addition to the original Genesis Mini. The price is also higher by $40 if you factor in shipping so i can see how this is not for everyone. However, i can wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who had a Genesis back in the day or is interested in exploring the library a little deeper. They do make up for it by giving you 60 titles vs the original's 40. the titles picked here are a mix of some of the best games on the system - Earthworm Jim 2, Fatal Fury 2, Golden Axe 2, Lightening Force, Ranger-X, Shadow Dancer, Shining Force II, Streets of Rage 3, Splatterhouse 2, Super Street Fighter 2, Revenge of Shinobi, Vector Man 2... and some deep cuts that people may not be familiar but are still incredible - Alien Soldier, Crusader of Centy (itself a $1000 game), Elemental Master, Midnight Resistance, Ristar etc. SO many of these games cost hundreds by themselves. There are also a few games which may not have aged well but are fascinating vignettes into Sega's Arcade lineup that were responsible for the console's early success and reputation as a processing powerhouse - After Burner II, OutRun, Super Hang On, Virtua Racing. There are definitely some hidden gems as well, Rolling Thunder 2, Herzog Zwei, Warsong, The Ooze all come to mind. BTW, Warsong and Populous look fantastic on a modern screen and a pleasure to play! Of course another huge draw is the inclusion of some of the best Sega CD games (and some of the worst). Sonic CD is arguably the best Sonic game of the 16 bit generation with an incredible soundtrack and gameplay which promotes exploration vs speeding through levels. Shining Force CD is Strategy RPG royalty. Final Fight CD is the best home version of the classic beat em up and Robo Aleste tops is the cherry on top of the already incredible Shmup lineup here. In fact, if you like shmups, this is a must have as it has arguably all the best ones on the console, missing only MUSHA and Android Assault. Even the "awful" FMV games are a fun throwback and interesting history lesson in what we all thought was the future of gaming in 1993. I concede that this mini alone isn't an adequate slice of the console's incredible library, but neither is the first mini. With 60 games everyone is bound to find something they love (the reviewer who gave this 1 star is insane). Between the best shmups of the 16 bit era, some of the best beat em ups, fighting games, RPGs and excellent arcade ports - this is an all star lineup. Another perk is because of the Sega CD games, this console has a lot more storage than the first mini and if you dont mind removing some of the "bad" FMV Sega CD games, you can hack and load it up with practically the entire Genesis library. At $120 it is a luxury purchase for sure, especially since with very little effort one can play every 90s cartridge game on a Wii for a fraction of the price. But if you love official hardware and/or a fan of Sega at its peak, this is a fantastic little package (and it IS little, the box is about half the size of the original mini). A+, would buy again. P.S. I didn't bother reviewing the actual hardware, but it's of fantastic quality and i really appreciate the inclusion of a 6 button USB controller which is IDENTICAL to the original (this is good) as well as power adapter which none of the other mini consoles come with.

Great performing Retro System
If you are Retro gaming fan and are looking to avoid acquiring pricey original hardware and game cartridges this system along with the first edition Mini Genesis is sure to please with the wide game selection and simple plug and play interface makes this a joyful experience. Highly recommend getting both mini systems to get over 100 great Genesis and Sega CD games to scratch that Nostalgic itch. Cant go wrong with built in memory to save game data wherever you want with the system interface at a click of 1 button and resume right away. Very satisfied with this product.

6-Button Pad is better than Retro-Bits
Solid unit. It is one of the better minis. I own the Genesis Mini 1 and was using 2 of Retro-Bit's 6-Button pads with it and I was okay with them. I have never tried the Mega Drive Mini 1 (Japan) 6-buttons before. The one that comes packed in with this Genesis 2 Mini is really, really nice. Superior to the one's that Retro-Bit sell for 20 bucks. I wish this Mini came with 2 of these pads. The usb plug is even branded "SEGA" like the first models 3-Buttons, and unlike Retro-Bits. I think everything else has already been said about this unit online. Its clearly the Mega Drive unit with no power light indicator and a toggle switch power button with genesis branding, but, I'm happy we got this at any rate. The Power Switch on the unit feels more solid than the first models switch. It even comes with a USB power brick, I would recommend this unit to people who collect the various mini systems, or someone wanting a quality stocking stuffer for the retro gamer. DRAXXON EDIT - I see the Retro-Bit Sega pads are disappearing fast. I have tried the Genesis Mini 1's 3-Button Pads, the Retro-Bit 6 and 8-Button Genesis pads and even the Retro-Bit Sega Saturn pads, and they all work fine with the Genesis Mini 2. (Press Start+X for the Menu Button on Sega Saturn style pads).

The Participation Trophy We All Didn't Know We Needed.
I love my little Sega Genesis Mini 2. I mainly got this one for the Shooting games - After Burner 2, Fantasy Zone, Hellfire, and Truxton. I also dig the Beat-'Em-Ups Final Fight and Streets Of Rage 3, so that's a bonus. I'm a casual gamer, so I can't gauge the accuracy of the emulation of these games. The games could be "broken" for all I know, but I'm still playing them because they are fun. I don't think I can say anything that hasn't already been said about this mini console. If you're going to get one, you're going to get one. I can't think of any downsides: 100 bucks gets chu a pretty cool little console with entertaining and fun games. If you were to actually try to get this set-up to play natively, I can't even estimate how much time and money that would cost. I'd say the next best thing is to buy the digital collections on the current consoles or on Steam, but, here, you get the benefit of a decorative item to go with it - like a little trophy to display! 👍🏽🐔👍🏽

Even Better Than Version 1!
First of all, I am a huge fan and collecter of the classic and mini consoles. I've collected at least one version of seven, out of eight classic/mini consoles made, mini/classic consoles. Moreover, out of all the 16-bit systems, the sega genesis was my favorite growing up. I'm a 32 year old guy with a fairly decent collection of gaming content. The first version of the Sega Genesis mini was a solid unit back in 2019. The only drawback was that they shipped with the 3 button controllers instead of the 6 button like with the Genesis 2. Also, the game selection was decent but a little short on the coverage with only 40 games. Given that the games selected for it were all fairly decent at the very least, I feel the Genesis 2 hits that quality mark a little better. Also there is 60 games over 40. But if you have both units, at their stock value with no jailbreaking, that's 100 Genesis titles. Also, all the peripherals and controllers made for the Genesis mini 1 are compatible with the Genesis mini 2. So you literally don't have to purchase anything else, but the actual mini2, to enjoy the mini 2. Yes that means the 3 button controllers will work on it if that's your preference. Lastly, despite the Genesis 2 being Amazon exclusive, the price tag seems feasible for 60 games. There is a roughly $30 shipping fee though since it's coming from Japan, which is the only thing I didn't like about it. Nonetheless, the unit is worth it. It's got the look down packed, just like the mini 1, and the entertainment is there so no regrets.

Must-own package for retro fans
In case the description is confusing, here's what's going on: You are in fact getting the North American version of this console. Sega did a much smaller run of this console than the first one, so they're shipping these *directly from Japan* using Amazon exclusively for fulfillment. The Sega Genesis Mini 2 is of course the follow up to the great Sega Genesis Mini console. That console was styled as a tiny version of the Sega Genesis model 1 console from 1989. This one is styled to look like a tiny version of the Sega Genesis model 2 from 1993, properly scaled to be more compact than the first, just like the real ones. (Detail-oriented fans will notice it's really a Mega Drive 2 in the North American colorway - they didn't update the power button or power LED to match the real Genesis 2.) If that first mini console had a list of tiles that might be the "greatest hits," this one is curated to include more "fan favorites," Sega CD, and other oddities. There are a number of Japan-only titles that aren't included on this North American version It's worth it to own both consoles. The list of titles complement each other and no titles are duplicated. Well, that's technically true. This one does include the enhanced versions of several titles on the first Mini. So you do get the improved Sega CD versions of several classics, the next minor version of Street Fighter II, and a novel new port of Space Harrier II which uses a "hardware scaling" feature that never even existed on the Genesis. So if you missed the first one, the holes in your library actually won't be *that* bad. This time around, there are a whopping 60 games included. These include some of my favorites from back in the day. You get Phantasy Star II, the first 16-bit JRPG and the title that convinced me I wanted a Genesis for Christmas. You get Herzog Zwei, the classic proto-RTS. You get the lovely Sega CD versions of Ecco the Dolphin 1 & 2. You get the notorious Night Trap, maybe not actually a good game but historically important for how it pioneered FMV and how it's more-or-less directly responsible for the creation of the ESRB. You get Virtua Racing, an arcade port that required a special oversized cartridge to house its custom graphics chip, and retailed for an unheard-of US$100! You get a couple titles from the major (and once litigated!) third-party publisher Electronic Arts. This is a nice nod to the importance of EA to the system, but there's no Road Rash and no Madden - I imagine getting renewed NFL rights is some kind of nightmare. You get seven *new* games - lost unreleased games that M2 finished just for this, new ports of games that never released on Genesis, and that new Space Harrier port mentioned earlier. (Aside: I wish they'd include fewer arcade ports and more original titles in these, since these days game systems can perfectly emulate the actual arcade editions at home. I don't know why you'd play Virtua Racing for Genesis when you could play the excellent AGES port for Nintendo Switch. I suspect these Genesis home versions will still press a lot of nostalgia buttons for many though.) There are only a couple Japan-exclusive titles included on this North American version of the console, but this time they show up main list and you don't have to resort to changing the language just to see them. You can still change the language to Japanese or German if you want to see the JP or EU art (the menu logos change and everything!) just be sure to memorize the menu positions if you can't read those languages. I can't find any obvious flaws or slowdown in the emulation, but I haven't dug to deeply into the games yet either. There's even an option here to toggle between the very slightly different sound of the Genesis 1 and Genesis 2, which gives you an idea how much love and detail went into this. The UI enjoys minor improvements over the first console. One of the new widescreen bezels looks a lot like the bezel of a circa 2000 CRT TV, and combined with the (not enabled by default) CRT filter it really helps these games feel a lot like they did in the 90s. You can sort the titles in several ways, and the "shelf" view really shows off the mix of Genesis carts, Sega CDs, and a few Mega CDs. This time around, the menu UI takes full advantage of the six-button controller, which is pretty slick. Most Sega Genesis games were designed for the 3-button controller and don't use the extra buttons, so if you've got those from the first Mini I suppose you can still plug them in to play but might run into a snag in the menus. I had read reviews complaining about the controller, and was confused, because I had bought a pair of the six-button Retro-Bit controllers for the first one, and those are perfect replicas of the original Sega ones, and the controller here sure looks the same. It turns out the single(!) six-button controller included in this package has the exact same housing as the Retro-Bit controllers, down to the mode button, but has the Sega logo on the back, and the D-pad is very mushy, not like the original or the Retro-Bit ones. If you buy this, I urge you to also pick up a pair of "Retro-Bit Official Sega Genesis USB Controller 6-Button Arcade Pad for Sega Genesis Mini" or maybe even spring for a pair of 8BitDo M30 2.4Ghz (not Bluetooth) controllers, and leave the bundled controller in the box. You'll spend more but you'll have a much better time. I have to deduct one star for this cheapness! Sadly, the (non-functioning, purely cosmetic) Sega CD 2 drive attachment is not being released for North America. You can still find the Japanese Mega CD 2 attachment floating around the secondary market, and it should attach, but it will be in the Japanese colorway with a Japanese Sonic CD "disc". There's zero utility to this thing at all, but it's one of those geeky little collectibles I wish they had released. I've got multiple versions of most of these games emulated across several platform and was a little on the fence whether I should buy these games *yet again*, but I'm glad I picked it up, it's a fun little package. Just be aware that you'll want to spend a little extra if you don't have the good third-party controllers already.

Amazing console!
Really great little console, same excellent quality as the original Genesis Mini. The 6-button controller feels fantastic. Sega still knows how to make awesome hardware. Even the power brick and the Micro-USB cable that powers the system both have the Sega branding engraved on them. As for the games it comes with, there are actually a lot more good games on here than I realized. Puyo Puyo Sun I think was the first time my girlfriend ever played Puyo, and we had a blast in the versus mode. ^^ Other awesome games on it include Sonic CD, OutRun, Fantasy Zone Silpheed, Ristar, Super Street Fighter 2, Super Hang On, Streets of Rage 3, Splatterhouse 2, etc. So many good games to choose from, no matter what genres you prefer. I really hope the Mini 2 is successful and Sega continues releasing these mini consoles, because it's a great reminder of how much they've been missed as a hardware manufacturer and how awesome their stuff really was.
