A fascinating subject reduced to a political polemic against gentrification. There is a lot of good material in this book, but the oldest continuously populated district in Rome deserves better.

Shorter: Nasty tourists and the nouveau riche have ruined my sabbatical home!I have to agree with the other reviewer that the strident and polemical tone detracts from this otherwise learned and detailed study by an intelligent, if somewhat cranky, scholar.One gets the sense (given the extensive amount of purely anecdotal material) that this book was dashed off in order to justify an extended research leave in Rome. More power to the author! But one is left wondering what makes Herzfeld the arbiter of authentic Romanita' (Roman-ness)?
