Does the company make a smaller less obtusive version of the dishwasher magnet?

Yes, it has magnets in the back which will adhere to dishwashers made of metal. It also comes with double sided tape if the dishwasher is of other material.

I noticed the edges are really rough on the sliding edge. Jagged and not smooth. Is that normal?

Mine is not jagged at all. As a matter of fact it is too smooth. It move too easily. You could accidentally slide it one way or the other.

Are the letters raised vinyl or etched into the metal? I actually need it to say "open" and "closed" so plan on removing the lettering. Can I?

I believe the lettering is etched into the metal. There are several "Clean/Dirty" magnets on the market and you might have better luck with one of the others.
