you will see the word "TOP" inside the paddle switch. to answer your question, the locator light area, the small circle, goes on top side.

Will this work in countries with 220volt currents?

I do not know but the socket configuration is unique to the US, Canada, Mexico and Japan anyway (110V all of them)
