More than Moonshine: Appalachian Recipes and Recollections (Regional)

Good information along with stories
Liked it so much I'm going to get one for my daughter. It has some recipes that you don't find very often like wild game recipes...Opossum. Not that I plan to eat opossum but you never know when I might have to in todays crazy economy. I also really enjoyed the stories.

Is it a cookbook? A memoir? An Appalachian history? Yes to all.
I have wanted this book for a long time after hearing it described on Celebrating Appalachia. It's a little high for my budget, so I had to wait for a while. Even after I finally got to order it, it took a long time to arrive. I could hardly wait to get it. But... it was worth the wait! What a fantastic book. I actually sat at the post office and went through it page by page. The food and memories are ones many of us share who have roots in Appalachia. Reading this book is somewhat like going home after being gone far too long. If it were cheaper I'd buy many copies for gifts.

Super Cool!
The only thing I don't really appreciate about this book (or similar books for that matter) is there is no list of essential items with reccomended quantities. I'd like to see something like keep as much sugar and salt on hand as you can, 10 lbs of lye, 30 lbs of grain, etc and whatever. That would help greatly, but none of the books I've come across in this genre seem to do this.Other than that, this book really breaks down some rather simple and handy recipes for you. I like it a lot so far and reccomend it for any library for those who'd like to have an edge in the event reverting back to the old ways becomes necessary. It can also be fun to just use for experimentation and hobbying.

We are often defined by what we eat....
Sidney Saylor Farr does an excellent job in recalling both the recipes and the culture behind an often overlooked section of our national heritage. Those that are interested in the Appalachian lifestyle or food's use as a tool for examining a culture will be fascinated by More Than Moonshine. Those interested in re-creating some of the home cooking that permeated the region also won't be disappointed.By following recipes such as these, citizens in one of the poorer regions of our country managed to survive - and indeed thrive - during some of our nation's leanest years. The practical skills presented in this book should also not be ignored.
