Neil Young is one of the finest singer/songwriters ever in rock and popular music. Neil waving his musical magic like no one else can do. Live On Air Volume 2 contains 6 songs, recorded live in the UK for a local radiostation. A brilliant performance; never released before - the lost radio-tapes from 1991.

Questionable release
Here is an attempt to shed some light on this release. I am virtually certain that Neil Young did not approve this release. This appears to be a solo acoustic performance with Neil playing guitar and occasional organ. Recording length is 39:33. Amazon's product description is taken directly from the CD packaging and those 3 sentences are the only information provided. No info regarding venue. The CD doesn't give ANY information regarding date or specific location other than "a local radio station." Amazon says this was recorded in 1991, but the CD does not give any date. Neil plays Harvest Moon which was not released until 1992. Does anyone know if he was playing it in 1991?Now for the recording quality; I would be shocked if this was recorded for a radio station, unless radio stations have started sending audience members to record concerts! From the opening few seconds, it was pretty clear that this is an audience recorded bootleg. Clapping and other audience sounds between (and sometimes during) the songs overwhelm the microphone and drown out the other sounds and the overall ambiance of the recording just makes it obvious that an audience member recorded this performance. In addition, the sound level briefly fades to zero between every song, presumably to hide audience chatter. XXL media, the company that released this, is also responsible for a recent Yes DVD that was a direct copy of a fan-traded bootleg. They appear to be up to the same tricks again. That having been said, the performance is very good, reminiscent of the Unplugged album. For an audience recording, this is very well done, the audience is VERY quiet and does not, in my opinion, interfere with the enjoyment of the music, but you should know what you're buying before you buy it. Enjoy (or don't)!

fuzz toned jamming from Neil Young
Live in Rio January 20, 2001. I'm glad I got this. Finally I have a recent live version (a very good one too) of "Down by the River". This is a jam album with only 6 tracks - Cortez the Killer, Like a Hurricane, Powderfinger, Rockin in the Free World, Down by the River, and Welfare Mothers. 'Cortez' spans almost 15 minutes which is sweet. I've seen Neil in concert jam out like this, so I knew what to expect. Remember, you have to like Neil Young in order to like this recording at all. Yes I know that this CD is not on Neil's record label Reprise. Do I care? NOPE. The music is all that matters.PS get "Lost Tapes Volume 1" for live acoustic from 1999 in Houston TX

I Feel So Dirty!
First off I must admit that I am a "Major" Neil Young fan. Historically if his name is on it, I buy it. I believe it may be called Running on Faith? This time I call it, Big Mistake! Of course, that is only if you consider the loss of $11.99 (plus shipping and handling) to be big.If you are a fan you most likely already own each of the tunes represented on this release. If so, put them together on a playlist and save these dollars!Have you ever attended a concert and wound up sitting next to a slighty over exuberant fan boy that tended to diminish your enjoyment level of the occasion? If so this recording may very well bring you back to that time. If you have any interest in collecting items which take you back to less than pleasant experiences this purchase may be right up your alley! The music is not bad (big surprise here) but the guy whistling next to the microphone causing distortion, clapping and making other expressions of his exhuberation were seriously annoying.Bottom line, if your idea of a good time is a bad time, enjoy!

He sings about life hard but with carring & love about HUMANITY
Big Neil Young fan. He sings about life hard but with carring & love about HUMANITY. Then the ๐ power of his style of Music ๐ถ truns his electric guitar we have very heavy metal. Only Neil Young can bend electricity his way, full control take no prisoner. Great Music. 5*****`s all the way.

Audience Recorded Bootleg - Get Unplugged
Read the first review by Christopher Straub, it pretty much nails everything. This is an audience recorded bootleg although of of a great performance. No radio station would have broadcast a tape of this quality. When I ordered it, I thought it was one of his archive releases, but it certainly is not. I suspect it was from the solo tour he made supporting Harvest Moon, one of my favorite all time Neil shows. (However, I recalled that he played After the Goldrush entirely on organ, while on this recording he starts on piano and walks over to finish on organ during a brief harmonica solo.) I guess that was 1992.So my advice is to buy Unplugged. It is a much better recording and performance, and was made soon afterwards. The Lost Tapes is solely for hardcore Neil fans who can put up with the medium quality sound and occaisional interuptions for audience applause. That being said, and if I have the correct year, it is unique to hear him play Last Trip to Tulsa and Ambulance Blues at that point in his career.

Distortion Is Beautiful
Come on! Ragged distorted sound is part of Neil Young's arsenal. I could . . . and have . . listened to Powderfinger on this album over and over. The controlled distortion and wah-wah mesmerize me. You don't think Neil listen to this collection before releasing it? I am thrilled that he and I love the same kind of original grunge.

Drop Outsโฆ
I like Neil Young, longtime fan boy here, no problems to me if it is just one long song. I'm good with that. This disc is subpar in the recording area, There are at least 3-4 drop outs in the album that just blank to silence, in the middle of the songs. I don't think Neil is behind this CD, it is not near up to his standards for quality, regardless of if you like his music or not. I have volume one of this two disc set as well. I don't play it much eitherโฆ but glad to have them on the shelf and in the computer just the same. Not the worst disc I own, but don't expect a perfect platter, 'cause it is just made with the errors noted. I can live with it I suppose, you might be able to as well. Just a heads up so that you won't feel cheated 'cause the mastering here sucks.

If you love Neil, you will love this cd
All the songs on this cd were played live on June 2, 1999 at the Aerial Theater in Houston. Whether the cd is all from that venue - who knows, as Neil played these songs throughout the Spring 1999 tour. It could be a compilation or it could be only from Houston. It is a wonderful cd if you love Neil. Grab it while you can.

It's pretty good...
I knowingly bought both copies of the 'Lost Tapes' as bootlegs, and wanted to feed back to anyone wanting them for the music and not the label. This review is not reference to it being a bootleg, because it just is. There's no debate to be had. It's ยฃ15+ for 6 songs someone appears to have taped at a gig, in Rio if the call near the beginning tells us anything (hardly a radio recording...).The album itself is pretty good. All the songs sound solid and, if you can listen past the quality of the recording, have an energy and rhythm to them. It's true that there's nothing on this album that hasn't already been released... but Cortez the Killer is potentially one of the best versions of this song, Like a Hurricane has an interesting backing to it and Welfare Mothers is great. But frankly, 5 of the 6 songs are on the overdriven, Crazy Horse backed, top notch quality, official release of Weld. Down by the River has a cool effect to it, and sounds more tuneful than the Fillmore release. Whilst Volume 1 had Ambulance Blues that justified giving it a go, this album lacks a clincher or a gem that would be unavailable elsewhere. You'd think the point of a bootleg would give the freedom to do that, but hey ho.The album is also effected by the occasional interference... although it is perhaps only 2-3 times across the hour, it's a reminder that this is in no way an official release. There are also some rather abrupt cut offs at the end of songs.Reading other reviews will put people off, and in some cases rightly so. I wouldn't normally recommend a bootleg, and I certainly wouldn't want to mislead people into buying one. But Cow Palace was a decent quality release, and to be honest so are these. Both suffer with the occasional lapse in quality you just have to accept with a bootleg. For those who enjoyed Cow Palace, the cut from mono to stereo at the start of 'Violent Side' and the woeful quality of the two Trans tracks are hardly ignorable, but don't ruin the album. Admittedly though, there is less here, and whilst Vol 1 had Ambulance Blues, Cow Palace has Opera Star, Around the World and other songs previously unreleased live... this adds nothing particularly new, and for that reason in particular, it just doesn't justify the steep price.

Hmm, rrrr, well, nah, well maybe, um, you see, er
Buying this just after the recent not-authorised but not-bootleg excellent 2-CD Cow Palace, this is a bit of a disappointment. But it isn't worthless either. If you prefer your Young acoustic (you're missing him at his best) then steer clear. These are 6 tracks from an hour-long set with time ranging from 7.20 to 14.40 so you just know you're going to get a lot of guitar solos which suits me just fine so that's a definite plus. On the other hand, compared to Cow Palace, the sound isn't great though it isn't crap either.Basically, unless you're a total die-hard gotta have everything Young fan, you can skip this. Unless you can get it cheaper than the current price. Around eight quid would be fair.
