This is the real stuff, Authentic. Exciteing to try out such an old food technology!
This is the real stuff, authentic. If you want to know what real pemmican tastes like this is where to get it. I am excited to try out such an old food technology.Nice packaging, the in-bag smell is of a slight beefy smell. I am surprised the beef flavor is not immediately present on taste, however, it builds the longer you chew it and all the flavors of beef come into focus, peppercorns are present and some berry taste as well.I am glad to have gotten the opportunity to taste what actual pemmican is like! I am going to be sharing this with family members as well, good stuff. If you heat this up the flavor is amazing!! A very powerful beefy flavor. As an aside my dog who is not very food motivated normally was intensely interested in this after I warmed it up.

Used to enjoy... recipe change. Please go back!!!
Received my April auto shipment that I bumped up to 8 from 5 for the covid19 crisis. Something definitely changed w recipe. Just finished last 3 squares from previous batch in morning had a had thin fat layer on bottom as has been norm and hardish at room temp. Just received batch no fat layer and soft. Trusting past experience w product tried piece. Spit out ... odd taste could not stomach. Checked all newly received material same slightly melted wet look. Definite recipe change... will be cancelling. May buy after crisis as really enjoyed the fulfillment and pepper bite of previous batches.

This Pemmincan by Lakeside Gourmet is the real deal for paleo diets.
This Pemmincan by Lakeside Gourmet is the real deal! I love the freshness: the pepper taste like it was just put thru the grinder. I'm on a paleo diet and wanted to make my own pemmincan, but the time involved exceded my availability. I wanted something that would sustain me when my work/school/family schedule made it difficult to prepare breakfast. Something that I didn't have to worry about refrigeration and had REALLY LONG shelf life. Something I could put in my emergency kit. This Pemmincan from is a quality product. When I first tried Real Pemmincan by Lakeside Gourmet, I ate it straight to get a sense of the product on its own. I like to add it into potatoes and onions, but I still enjoy just grabbing a piece when I know my morning is Go Go Go and no time to prep. It keeps me from getting cravings until a late lunch.

Worth the money for someone that never tried pemmican.
I've read alot of reviews regarding that pemmican and let's just say that there are many false comments regarding the taste in general. For beginners, pemmican, as it is orginally made, is mostly tallow and not grounded jerky nor cranberries. The tallow is the main ingredient that makes pemmican pemmican. Some says that the tallow is to keep the block together. Yes but the tallow is where you get the main energy source from. Also, the taste that alot of people complains about is the taste of the fat. Pemmican was originally a survival food and not a delight food. As a survival food source, it's not supposed to taste great but rather keep you alive by giving you energy. The fat that you taste, as previously noted, is what gives the most healthy energy as calories and protein source. Now I do agree that the price tag for those little cubes or blocks is quite high. But making pemmican is a skill set and art. So from somebody that ate pemmican must of my life, is that pemmican worth its weight in gold? As emergency and survival food especially in winter time, yes. Pemmican is an emergency and survival food that you carry backpacking, climbing and other outdoors activities with you to give you the energy needed. Its not supposed to taste good.

Pemmican!
Tastes ok, as a survival food it's great that it doesn't need refrigeration. The cranberries add a tartness to the flavor, and also increase the carbohydrates.

Best when mixed with other foods
5 Stars because this is the real stuffI’d compare pemmican to tofu such that it takes its flavor from how you cook it. You can eat it directly form the package but you’d only be doing it for the nutrition. I added a bit to my egg and enjoyed it. The listing said there were cranberry's in it but I couldn't taste or see them. Not sure if its because they are powdered or if i just didn't get any.I'll be mixing this with other foods and not eating directly from the package. When you bite into a square the texture is unique. The dried meat has been powdered and mixed with grass fed rendered fat so there’s no resistance or chewing that needs to be done. I guess it’s a bit like biting into soft flavorless wax so you’re really just getting the mouth feel from it. I tried dipping it in salt, Tabasco sauce and buffalo wing sauce but the nothingness was still strong. For a more flavorful experience I think you’d need to thoroughly mix your flavoring into it and not just dip it. I'm excited to try mixing it into other dishes.I’d recommend this product to those curious about a historic foods, those doing Keto or for folks that want to experiment with it. I’d like to see it offered in savory flavors.

Expensive and not good for most eating
I really really wanted to like this stuff, but I would not suggest eating it on its own. I would use it as a fat or oil ingredient in cooking a stew or something else. On it's own its pretty bad, and I am not some picky eater. Ive eaten and tried several survival foods over time. If you have some money to burn I'd say go for it and have fun, but don't expect it to taste good. If you want a similar experience id say just get an ounce of lard and bit into it, its very very similar, and that is what this is supposed to be.I was ignorant until I tried this, but now I know and will be using this as a oil/fat cooking ingredient.

Yuck!
Now, I've never tried pemmican before, so I suppose this could be the greatest pemmican on the planet and pemmican just doesn't suit me but I couldn't stomach it! It is nothing like close to jerky. The cranberries are hard, and don't add a good flavor. I was expecting a meaty, jerky flavor and texture, with chewy cranberries, but it just tastes like animal fat pureed and mixed with dried cranberries. I tried it several times, thinking it may be an acquired taste, but came close to throwing up each time. Just plain gross!
