Makes for legal transport of otherwise illegal transported items...
I use this thing all the time. I bought three in all, from various vendors - and they are a great idea. After much use, I have seen that the inside piece separated from it's base, but a little epoxy fixed that issue. Don't use the alarm feature, but I like that it makes it look as if the alarm keypad were for the lock. The cable works, but it's not cut proof. Still, I love this item.

not bad...
As far as cheap car safes go, this one is not bad. Pretty heavy duty and the tether cable is larger than others I've used. Be careful of the product image, it shows a different model of Xitel Auto Safe.

Lock box to go!
Nice, little, solid metal box, that fits well under a car seat. Good to use for those items you need to lock away. I use it for my GPS and it fits with room to spare.

Basic Solution for Cars with No Trunk
There are many lock boxes on the market that serve the same purpose. Some have brackets you install, or combination keypads so you don't have to carry a key. Some hold more stuff or lock with a more secure bolt mechanism. However, if someone breaks into your car, and they're determined to get your stuff, there is no lock box in existence that will stop them. This box is about as cost-effective and still functionally effective box as you'll find. The hard plastic drawer slides into an aluminum outer box and is secured by an aluminum peg that inserts into a hole. The cable has the same peg attached to its end. The cable has a loop in one end that allows the peg end to be threaded around a seat mount or other somewhat permanent fixture in the car, and back through the loop. The peg is then locked in place by a barrel lock latch that engages with a slot in the peg inside the box. All this is to say that mechanically, this lock box has a simple design that works well.Once the box is cabled to something in the car and locked, it would easily prevent a typical "smash and grab" break-in. It is big enough to hold a GPS, a garage door opener, a phone or ipod, and an average sized wallet, but not much more. Anything much bigger would just get in the way. Anything much smaller wouldn't be very useful. If you ever leave your car in an area where someone might break out a window and take things that would compromise your identity (or your home security), a box like this is a must. Again, you could never deter a thief who is intent on getting what you have, but this box does what any good lock should do by making your stuff too inconvenient to get, and inspiring the would be thief to move on to the next car instead.I've been using this to secure a few things when I park at a trailhead in a remote area when I'll be gone on a bike ride or a hike for several hours. Since my car does not have a trunk, this simple little inexpensive box eliminates the worry that I've made things too easy for a crook, and lets me enjoy my outdoor activities a bit more.
