great for boys 5-9
My seven year old loves these stories. They are the condensed versions of the original stories but don't leave out any of the important details. He wants them read over and over again. A great introduction to classic literature. Hopefully he will be inspired to read the full stories (or listen to them) when he's a few years older. Each story takes about 20-25 minutes to read aloud so they are fine for bedtime. We have also enjoyed the other Usborne books in this series: Illustrated Classics for boys (his favorite), Shakespere, Greek myths.

Great illustrations
Excellent illustrations. These are classic stories with bright and vibrant illustrations. It is a favorite of my 5-year old (though admittedly, the stories are a bit beyond him yet).

Great intro to the classics
Great intro to the classics! The pictures are fantastic and the stories are long enough and have enough detail to keep an older child (7) engaged, and not too long that my 4 year old gets board. We Love USBORNE!

Great stories for adventurous boys (but beware of graphic violence)
Usborne books are FANTASTIC, and this one is no exception. I've been reading this to my seven year old son, and he loves the stories. He likes adventure. The stories are abridged from the originals without leaving out good detail. The stories' internal transitions can be somewhat abrupt because of the abridgement, but they still flow. The stories are engaging and easy to follow for young readers. My son never wants me to stop reading! He could read it himself, and it would stretch his vocabulary. It is a bit dense for him presently, but barely. The story progresses quickly when we alternate reading pages. I recommend this book for energetic young adventurer. Be advised, though, that there is violence. That's why I give it four stars instead of five. Stories describe events such as duels that result in mortal injury and actual death. There are sword fights and shootouts. The Prisoner of Zenda has a description and picture of a man with his throat slit by a knife. I think that's too graphic for young readers, but I'd still recommend this book.
