The straps on the inside of the bag with the hooks are way too long to utilize as floor tom hangers. What are they for? Am I not using them correctly?

Hi. The long straps with the push claps Wrap Around the Floor Tom and are attached to the tuning Lugs. This keeps the bag pulled tight against the drum. It's a great fit. I have one of each stick bag offered by WerKens. I've been in the business a long time and the value these bags offer is undeniable. Excellent bag.

will mallets fit in this bag? I'm wanting to buy this for a band kid who is a percussionist.

It should, depending on how big the ends of your mallets are. I like the bag personally. It holds everything my previous bag did without any problems and I have several pairs of sticks, brushes, hot rods and I even carry my mic in the outside pocket. Very versatile. I think you should be fine. We used to own a music store and had access to any bag and this one is by far the nicest bag I've ever had, especially for the price. I would buy it. They'll fit...
