Expanded and updated to include an additional 44 species, this is a handy guide to those fishes that are likely to be observed by anybody visiting or diving on the coral reefs of the Caribbean, the Indian Ocean, and the Pacific to a depth of sixty meters. Accessible to amateur marine life enthusiasts, this book is the first comprehensive guide of its kind. It enables the reader to quickly identify 2,118 species of fish and includes over 2,500 color illustrations depicting the major forms of each species--male, female, immature, or geographical varieties. The text proceeds according to region, depicting each species and its varieties, and offering information on its geographic range and where on the coral reef itself the fish may be found. Important identification characteristics are highlighted on every color plate. Review: So many reasons to love this reef fish book! - Somehow this book manages to cover just about every species of reef fish you can encounter in both Atlantic and Pacific reefs. In my opinion the incredibly detailed color illustrations actually work better for identification than photos. I also love that you can compare so many similar species on a single page. Concise descriptions stick to the main details and include the species range and ecology. Definitely worth the money! Review: coral reef fishes - i bought it used, it was very good buy....the marine biology 1st chapter is very good...the reference pictures and location glossary are 1st rate

Great informative book on tropical fishes
I bought this book since I am a volunteer at the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, Georgia. This book is a tremendous resouce especially in the Tropical Diver Exhibit which has many species of tropical fish. It is helpful in identification and lists the fish by scientific as well as common names. I would highly recommend this guide for fish identification, and many of the volunteers use this guide as their resource as well.

Helpful and compact!
I love this compact and helpful little book. I shopped around a BUNCH before buying, and I feel confident I landed on the right book. I could easily spot my fish from the Maldives and the Red Sea!

Very detailed and comprehensive
A great complement to the Paul Humann/Ned DeLoach books. Highly recommended. Covers many varieties and variants. Compact enough to take with on dive excursions.

Good for Identification
This is an excellent field guide for identification purposes. However there is one major way I would like to see this book improved. I would like to see more detailed information about the fish rather than just identification, maybe more facts about ecology and behavior. Even though I have given the book three stars I would say that if you need a book for strictly identification purposes this book covers a numerous amount of fish, and the pictures provided do point out crucial identification characteristics.

identificação rápida e precisa
o livro é excelente pois me auxilia rapidamente a identificar os peixes e outros seres marinhos que fotografo quando em megulho ou mesmo em aquários

Drawings disappointing
The drawings of the fishes are approximative, not very useful to try and identify a fish. Colours not very faithful either.

Great for an amateur like me
Bought this for a holiday in the Maldives, as I knew I'd be doing lots of snorkelling. It's easy to use, and quite portable. Images and descriptions are very good. I can't really comment on the range of species covered - suffice to say that every 'interesting' fish I saw was in there.
