I’ve dabbled in smart home setups for a while, often getting frustrated by devices that barely communicate with each other or require endless fiddling. Setup was impressively quick — plug in, follow the app instructions, and within minutes everything was linked. Unlike some hubs I’ve tried in the past, it didn’t require multiple firmware updates or confusing pairing steps.The coverage is excellent. I placed the hub in the living room and it easily handled devices spread across the house. I currently have a smart switch, motion sensors, and the doorbell connected, and it’s been flawless. Notifications from the doorbell are immediate, and the chime options are plenty — 19 ringtones to suit different rooms or moods. The sound is loud enough to hear across the house without being annoyingly sharp, which is perfect for everyday use.One thing I particularly appreciate is the energy efficiency. Unlike some hubs that seem to draw more power than I’d like, this one feels unobtrusive, running quietly in the background without adding noticeable electricity usage. Update 31/01/24:TP-Link have recently made some great software/firmware updates to much of the Tapo product line.Firstly some degree of local automation is now available, when an automation is created in the Tapo app it will be identified whether or not it will continue to function without an internet connection.Even better news for some, Matter compatibility is now available on the H100 Smart Hub allowing most of the sub-devices to be connected to a Matter controller. This function is still in beta however I have found it to be working well through Home Assistant (where Matter is also still in beta). For those HA users who have been using the Tapo HACS integration I strongly recommend switching to Matter as the polling lag experienced by the Tapo HACS integration does not exist using Matter and it also works entirely locally with no need to connect to TP-Link’s servers. As Matter is still rather new buttons and the water leak sensor currently aren’t supported, but I suspect this is only a matter of time.Original review:The Tapo H100 smart hub is required if you wish to use any Tapo sensors/buttons/switches as these battery powered devices communicate over a ~868MHz connection not WiFi (2.4/5GHz). It is not required if you only have Tapo WiFi plugs, bulbs, cameras etc. The H100 is cheaper (at £15) than many hubs/bridges/gateways but as you would expect from TP-Link is a quality item and easy to setup via the Tapo app.Whether this hub and associated devices will work for you will really depend on what you’re trying to achieve. Automation options in the Tapo app are somewhat limited and are certainly less customisable than other ecosystems. For instance phone notifications cannot be setup for all sub-devices; sensors yes, buttons no.For those using Alexa once the Tapo skill has been installed the sub devices connected become available as triggers which opens up far more possibilities and the capability to control devices across other ecosystems. I tested using the motion sensor (T100) and smart button (S200B) to control some Philips Hue lights and both worked fine, albeit with occasionally a little delay.For those using Home Assistant the Tapo integration currently cannot access any sub devices connected to this hub.Unlike most systems that utilise a hub/bridge/gateway, any buttons or sensors connected to the Smart Hub will entirely cease to function if the internet connection is lost. There is no good reason for this and in my opinion is a very poor decision by TP-Link, local functionality is an absolute necessity for a reliable smart home. Light switches or security sensors not functioning because of a lost internet connection is a really dumb problem to introduce.Curiously this device fails badly with two of the main advertised features; smart doorbell and burglar alarm/deterrent. At the loudest setting the doorbell chime cannot be heard through more than two closed doors in silence, let alone with any background noise. Additionally the smart button does not permit phone notifications meaning you can’t be alerted that way either (this can be achieved via Alexa). The idea of using this in conjunction with some sensors as a burglar alarm is also sadly farcical. It is not loud enough to scare off anyone plus can be easily unplugged by a burglar.It is tricky to rate the H100, if the available sub-devices and automations meet your requirements then this is a good quality and well priced device. However if you were to rate it against some of the headline advertised features it would rate quite low. I’ve been generous as I mostly wanted this as a stand alone system in conjunction with a motion sensor (T100) to notify me by phone and keep a log, which it does well enough.

Needed a 2nd chime for my Tapo (TD21) battery doorbell. The details on here say the Hub100 dows not support TD21's but having read another review here (so went ahead and bought the hub100)I can confirm it does work and it is set up via the " action" options in the hub's settings after adding it to your tapo devices. Works well and means we can now hear the door bell further down the house.

This hub does what it is supposed to do. The problem is that no where does it really make clear what that is or at what level it integrates with Alexa.So here I tryThis hub is used to talked to various tapo devices but not allEssentially those that need a battery.What it does is talk to those battery operated devices. They do not use WiFi which would require a new battery every few weeks if not soonerInstead it uses a lower frequency than wi fi that transmits through walls well and so will also use much less powerThe hub then talks with Alexa but the Alexa integration is near zero other than asking Alexa to say tell you the temperature of the tapo thermometerAny smart routines have to be set up within the tapo app - which is excellentAnd talk to other tapo devices which are growing in number and I think tapo is going to survive and go placesThey are cheap on Amazon and work wellSmart plugs because they have access to mains power connect directly to WiFiThey can be controlled through Alexa and/or within the tapo appIf you only have smart plugs or bulbs you do not need this hubBut if you have say a tapi thermometer then you doI have mine set up within the tapo app to detect when the temperature drops below a certain temperature to activate a mains plug switch that a fan heater is plugged intoAnd to turn the the switch off when the heater then gets above a temperatureWithin Alexa all you can do is ask it to tell you the temperatureYou cannot currently set up routines within AlexaIn summary. I think Tapo devices will survive. The software is good. You only need the hub if talking to battery powered devicesAnd the reason for this is that you would need to replace the batteries every couple of weeks or even less if they connected to wi fi direct

Delivered on time easy set up small profile when plunged into wall socket. Good that’s is WiFi so no need for it to be by broadband router. Good value for money range is good no dropout issues. Will adding more devices to the hub in the future.

Great, a lot smaller than I thought it would be!It was fine until I needed to add a video doorbell, them I updated to the h200.Just to be clear, you can't use this with cameras or video doorbell, you need the h200 for that.For regular smart home tech though, switches and bulbs, it's perfect!Easy to use in the app, if you use a VPN, turn it off first or it'll be a pain to add!! Once it's there, it'll link up with the app really easily.

it's good but be careful and make sure your device and the hub are both UK or US so they can detect each other
