How is this one compared to the 1st gen 100% silicone shampoo brush?

Compared to the first gen, this one is bigger and thinner. I find that my hair can glide between these silicone spikes easily and it hardly pulls on my hair when I use it.

Does it help with hair growth?

I think it does. It should be more helpful if used with some hair care products.

Is it better to wash or massage your scalp with this in a forward and backward motion, or in a circular motion?

I usually use it in a forward and backward motion when washing my hair. This will not pull my hair. But when I massage my scalp, I use it in both directions and it makes my scalp feel great.

Does the brush get caught in hair easily, causing pulling and breakage?

No but I have short hair? I love it.
