Can the item be painted without using a sprayer?

I used a spray can of paint and feathered into the rest of the ceiling......could brush or roller as well once sufficiently dry.

do i still need to use compound to repair if i use this?

Best thing I ever bought! I had one ceiling pendant replaced with two leaving one 8 inch while in the ceiling. I repaired with same size round drywall, patched it with compound and let dry. No need to sand. I then used a large old paint brush, sunk it into the popcorn ceiling repair gunk and dabbed it onto the ceiling until I got the texture I wanted. It will dry white. Mine came out perfect! Good luck!
