Q: With power outages the batteries can’t be in as a back up to insure the lock is secure at all times?

I have kept the batteries in with the USB plugged in. No apparent issues so far.

Q: Can you put the key lock reader on the side to conceal or does it have to be on top directly above the inner locking mechanism?

it has to be on top the side is to far from reader

Q: How do you open it if the power is out?

It has a AAA battery backup on the release mechanism. The mechanism is normally powered by usb so you could use a usb battery pack if you wanted.
