The old ones were much heavier and sturdier
This is the "new" version of the 500 series vari-kennel. It will work for a crate trained dog. These are much lighter weight than the old 500 series. I still have my old 500 from 1989 and it is in great shape. I bought this version in 2010 for $100. Now the price is about 170-200 depending on where you get it. The one from 2010 and this one are much lighter than the original and have holes in the back wall of the upper half. Ventilation? Airline regs? Problem is a dog can get a grip on an edge and well, destroy from there. My dogs like to sleep in their kennels with the door open. The newer ones have a nasty vertical edge at the bottom, and top, for the door stop, that the old one does not have. So if I were going to crate train a dog or transport by air, I would look for a much stronger kennel which will cost at least twice what this new one does.
