Review of XICOOLEE Pico Expansion Plus GPIO Expander for Raspberry Pi Pico This is a good stripped down alternate to the more feature rich board also available from XICOOLEE/seengreat that has buttons, LED, SD, audio, buzzer, brass standoffs etc. So if you don't need those extras, but still want the GPIO status LEDs and an extra set of GPIO HY-2.0-4P connectors then this board is a good choice. However if you think you will need any of those, and want to tinker more with things on a board, then honestly for the small price difference the bigger board is the better deal. The purpose of the top switch isn't obvious and is just labeled with 3V3 and 5V but it actually controls the voltage on each of the GPIO HY-2.0-4P connectors. The other switch below it controls the GPIO status LEDs. This doesn't have brass standoffs or mounting holes. Great packaging. I'm confused as to the relationship between XICOOLEE and Seengreat. The board, instructions and web page are all seengreat.

This GPIO expander for the Raspberry Pi Pico surprised me - I was expecting to be able to add two additional "hat" devices to a Pi, but I did not expect all the additional "quality of life" features. For example, there are LEDs for every GPIO output and input - this alone is great for debugging. In addition, it adds a Reset switch, something sorely needed with the Raspberry Pi. Throw in all the additional headers and outputs, and it becomes a "must have" for development work on the Pi. Oh, and throw in the fact that you can actually add two "hat" style Pi expansion devices, such as a battery pack and an OLED display, and this device falls into the "how did I live without it" category.

The first thing that strikes you when you receive this Pico Expansion Plus PCB is the quality of the packaging. Inside a strong cardboard box the expander is protected with an antistatic bag. Removing this is a bit tricky and care is needed to avoid damaging the pins, however, the pins themselves are further protected with foam pads. The quality of the board is of a very high standard and equal to the Pico and Pi boards you will be familiar with. The included sheet of instructions is clearly written and helpful, but I would strongly recommend you take screen shots of the pictures in this listing for future reference. I have added pictures of the instructions, which I have numbered as Amazon will mix them up. This is not a GPIO “expander”. As you can see from the pictures of the PCB the tracks simply duplicate the GPIO pins on the Pico to the banks of connectors either side and triplicate some to the sockets on the front. You don’t end up with any more GPIOs than you started with. There are true “expanders” that provide additional GPIOs, but they use I2C signals and ICs to create them and this board has no ICs. It follows from this that each bank has the same input or output status as the numbered GPIO on the Pico and they can’t be individually programmed. Having accepted that it is not going to double the number of GPIOs what use is the board? Very useful is the answer, with clear labelling and LEDs that show the status of each GPIO. The configuration allows wiring to be tidy and logical, enabling inputs and outputs to be separated left and right. The LEDs simplify fault finding and there is a switch to turn them all off once everything is working should you want to. The reset button is also most welcome, as anyone who has repeatedly fumbled removing and reinserting the USB plug to reboot the system will testify. A word of warning. The switch that controls the LEDs is very close to one that switches VBUS from 3.3V to 5V and accidental operation could have serious consequences as this affects all the VBUS pins. This board makes developing projects on the Raspberry Pi Pico easier and its construction and presentation make it good value at £11.15. The other components shown in the listing; the back up power supply and 8-segment display are available elsewhere on Amazon should you need them. My photographs show a Pico-W mounted on the board during my tests - this is not included with the extender, but again is available on Amazon.
