Q: How does it mount? At the bottom? If we don’t want a pile to go?

How does 'what' mount? The spear type tip is hard mounted (does not come off). There are two sctions with a sponge grip on them so it can be easily held with two hands. If you are talking about mounting the pole in a flag mount on a wall or something than you could certainly put one of the spong grip sections up further and put a plain section at the bottom to put in a mount. I wouldn't use this out doors all the time though as each section is threaded and wind will surely have them coming apart. It would be fine for staying in a floor stand indoors. It is nicely built and portable so we're using it for ceremonies and parades. Hope that gives you the right answer.

Q: Does the plastic tip/obelisk come off or is it permanently attached?

It is attached to a pole section. Looks to be a few heat welds that keep it on.

Q: How do the pieces fit together, do they screw together or is it a press fit?

Yes they screw together; quite strong- you wouldn't think it's 5 separate pieces. My daughter uses it for Chinese spear practice in karate.
