Yes with Quad lock phone case it locks onto the charger for the wireless charging

Do I have to have a quad lock case or will any mag safe case work?

This charging pad depends on having a quad lock case to lock onto it. I would get the phone case though. It’s so easy to just twist your phone onto it to mount your phone AND charge it at the same time. I have one in my Jeep when I go off-roading and it stays on.
