A nice looking light with good illumination
I bought this to replace a faulty stainless steel up and down light. It's subjective but I think this one looks much better. The light is from a known brand and is very well made. It has a PIR detector so that it only comes on when the ambient light level is low, and it detects movement. It requires a large Edison screw bulb (not supplied) with a maximum wattage of 60 W. I've used a 9 watt LED bulb, which gives plenty of illumination and is a 60 W equivalent. Inserting the bulb simply requires unscrewing two screws to remove the cover. The light fitting is mainly made of die-cast aluminium, painted white, with a clear plastic lens. The part that screws to the wall, the back plate, is plastic with a rubber gasket. This contains the wiring, there's not a lot of room, but more than in other light fittings I've had. The electrical connection is made to an electrical terminal strip and is easy to wire up with clearly marked connections (although the neutral is marked with an 'X'). The instructions are relatively clear but are in the form of pictures rather than words. To fit it I found it was easier to disconnect the existing wiring from the terminal block in order to remove the lamp body (make a note of where the 3 wires are connected to). This is then easier to position where to fix it to the wall without the lamp body hanging down. Also, I taped the back of the two bolts so that they don't fall out. Important: Ensure that the power is turned off. There are no fixing screws, but I had two suitable wall plugs and screws. There are two recessed holes in the back plate, and these need to be drilled for the fixing screws. It is important to ensure that the back plate is truly vertical because there is no adjustment once screwed to the wall. After reconnecting the internal wiring and wiring up to the mains, I tested the light to ensure it came on. I then mounted the light onto the backplate, being careful not to disturb the gasket, which is held by two domed nuts with washers. These are very small and it is a little tricky to screw them on without dropping them, particularly if on a ladder. However, once mounted, the light fitting is secure. I was initially disappointed that the light no longer came on after the fitting was mounted, but decided to leave it until the evening, when it was dark, before checking the wiring. When I tested it then the light came on and everything worked perfectly. There are two adjustments on the side of the detector, one to set at what ambient light level the light will come on at, and I presume the other is to set the period of time that the light stays on for. I may have to fine-tune these settings but the current ones seem to be fine. I'm very pleased with the light, it is superior to the one it replaced and gives out more than adequate illumination. The current Amazon price is very competitive compared to elsewhere.

Excellent PIR exterior lights
More expensive than some exterior lights, but this one is built to last. Very well made and simple to install. Doesn’t come with a bulb, but thats the only downside side. PIR and ambient light sensitivity can be tuned so that it comes on when your preferred level of darkness and proximity are reached. Well worth the extra money.

Great looking light
General A very modern looking light, a twist from the traditional style of a fire within a lamp well. The shell is made from aluminium and the windows made with plastic so it is pretty light weight compared to the metal casing and glass windows alternative. The windows being made from plastic can make it feel cheap but you wouldn't be able to tell it was plastic just by looking at it. It also means it is less likely to shatter on impact. This light is also compatible with LED bulbs so you can save some wattage while getting the most lumens. I'm currently using a 4W LED E27 SES bulb which is equivalent to a 40W incandescent bulb. Luohaoshi Dimmable 4-Pack 4W G45 E27 SES LED Filament Mini Globe Bulb Warm White 2700K 40W Incandescent Equivalent Edison Screw E27 LED Antique Clear Golf Ball Installation Not as simple as it should be, but ultimately there weren't any complications if you know a few details. First off I want to mention that mine didn't come with the back screws or raw plugs to the back wall. It could be that these type of lighting don't normally come with any screws or raw plugs, but you still need to be aware before you start installation and removing any old lighting. The back panel also didn't have the holes needed to screw into the wall so you will need to make your own either by drilling into it or cutting it out. The electrical wires are colour coded (as they should be nowadays) so wiring any existing wires from your house to the light is not an issue. I suggest you disconnect the lighting from the back base so it's easier to screw the base into the wall. Take a picture before you disconnect or refer to the manual so you know where the wires should go when you reconnect them. Other reviews have mentioned how "fiddly" it is to screw on the caps to fit the lighting onto the base unit. They are not wrong. The screws these caps are suppose to be attach too are about 1-2 mm too short, and unfortunately can be pushed back into the base unit if you are too forceful. These caps are also tiny, especially if you have big hands, and so if you drop them outside you can so easily lose them. To overcome this, I would suggest you put a large light colour sheet or blanket on the ground beneath where your light installation will be to catch the caps and prevent them from bouncing around too much. I would also remove the existing washers on the screws to gain back about 1mm and give you some more leg (finger) room. Configurability Two rotating screws on each side - one to adjust for how long the light stays on, and the other for it's daylight sensitivity before the motion sensor begins to work. Because it's a rotating screw you can't get the exact timing or daylight sensitivity and so you must do it by trial or error. I wished it had more settings to adjust for the motion sensor range and angle (as it is slightly too short where I have put it up) but I knew about this when I bought it. Conclusion (TLDR) Very nice modern looking light, supports LED, simple settings but have moderate installation issues. It's a high rating because once it has all been installed it looks great and works as intended even if the controls can't allow for precise settings. Loses a star mainly because of the caveats during installation.

Well made and works well. Looks great
I really like these outdoor wall lights and specifically bought Philips as I trust the brand. Installation is a breeze and one thing that worth noting is that they have built in support for pass through which is great. It means I have a motion sensor one and connected to the same switch an non-motion sensor one. Triggering the sensor then switches both lights on which is superb. Build quality is good and mostly metal and to be honest having looked around these came in cheaper than ones at a certain DIY chain and in my opinion are better. They take E27 bulbs and I bought some Philips 1000lm LED bulbs which work really well. What would also look nice in these are the filament style led bulbs. You can control the sensitivity of the air and the duration of the light easily. Overall a superb and reasonably priced outdoor light which looks great.

OK but if cable coming from side look elsewhere
***Update December 2025** In the last 3 months there has been a buzzing noise coming from the light and it sometimes comes on or activates and stays on or doesn't come on at all and then last week it failed completely. I don't know whether I can even be bothered to change the bulb as there is obviously something wrong with it and given the installation problems in my initial review, I think I will just change to a different one. What I didn't know and therefore the reason for the title of the review is that this is not suitable unless the cable is coming directly from behind the chosen mounting point. The able for my original light comes from the side and the previous owner had done a very dodgy connection. So I thought new light and a junction box to resolve the issue. So first mark down no way for a cable to enter the light from the side-I had to pack between the wall and the base of the unit with rubber so that the cable could enter. Second point - if possible ie. like me you are going to be connecting it to a junction box, then I would wholeheartedly recommend wiring the lamp up first - far too fiddly to do while stood on a step ladder. If you are going to connect it to a cable coming straight out of the wall I really hope you have a way of pulling any excess cable out of the way as with the size of the jointing block and the little earth post on the outside cover - there is very little room. Third point the nuts used to secure the light to the back plate are tiny and come with tiny spring washers - look at one in the photos I've uploaded next to a standard screwdriver bit-tiny. Again up a ladder you're going to lose them unless like me you use blutak to hold them in place. Fourthly - the screws to take the top cover off to install the bulb were horrifically tight. Not something I had considered so again was a nightmare when I was stood on a stepladder. Now its up - its bright (I did have to adjust the sensitivity controls as it was coming on in daylight and the duration) and it looks great on my grade 2 listed building. Would I buy another - no, far too fiddly.

Good quality light but not able to adjust motion sensor
This is a good quality product, very well made, and looks the part. In all good value for money. It is easy to install and the instructions are good enough even for the a novice DIYer to do themselves. I did look though the questions and reviews before buying, but not deep enough. This light has adjustable sensors for Light/dark - in that when the sensor is active and will light, so you can easily set it to be a dusk to dawn security light. It also has a sensor for the time the ight stats on once he motion sensor is triggered. However it does not have a motion sensor sensitivity adjustment. One question said that they had set it to about 4 metres, however this is not possible. If you live on a busy street this light will come on often as the motion detection is very good. Mine is always coming on. I am slightly disappointed with this as this is not what I wanted. It is a good deterrent through for any would-be burglar. I then went through the reviews and questions again and see that there are more posts that confirm this fact.
