It's not especially loud - makes a subdued hissing noise when the fans are on, but not intrusive. It is like having a white noise generator running in the background. I suffer from tinnitus so it's actually quite therapeutic.

Do you think this will work well with a 17.3" laptop?

It would cool BUT (1) the laptop will slide because the foam foot on the bottom corner of your laptop would not be on the cooler(2) a 15.6" laptop is covering the whole surface of the cooler so I woul expect stability problem with a 17.3"Hope it helps :)

Has anyone used this with MacBook Pro 17" 2.4GHz 2011 (MD311LL/A)? as bought a few fans that have not been quite big or powerful enough to do the job.

This is an excellent cooling solution and is really quiet. I have bought and tried several and this is by far and away the best.

What direction do the fans blow the air up or down ???

Good question. The fans blow UP. I use this fan on top of an amplifier's vents and the fans pull the air upwards through the amplifier and it cools it very well. The fan is very quiet but the noise increases if you lift it up away from a surface making a gap.
