How many different ways are there to arrange a sofa? What is the optimum distance between a sofa and a coffee table? What pieces of furniture do you need to arrange a nursery room? These and many more questions will be answered in this book. Furniture arrangement in residential spaces is the most complete book about furniture measurements and clearances around furnishings, types of furniture and furniture placement , room layouts , circulation paths, functional zones, etc. All figures are provided in both metric and imperial measurement units allowing readers to work in whichever system they prefer. The text is enriched with more than 300 diagrams and drawings, most of them dimensioned. The book is organized into chapters, which present the step-by-step process of furniture arranging. By starting with learning how to measure a space, then continuing with how to draw the floor plan of the space to scale and finally how to analyse the characteristics of each space, readers will proceed to learn how to arrange a living/dining room and also a bedroom. A chapter on how to arrange artwork on walls will help them as well. In the appendices, scale furniture cutouts and also sheets of graph paper are provided to readers so that they can draw the floor plan to scale. Certainly it is a must-have book for a wide range of professionals and students, like architects, interior designers, home stagers, space planers and decorators. It is also valuable for do-it-yourself enthusiasts that simply want to rearrange their home. By using this book, you will understand that furniture arrangement is not a one solution problem, but actually is a creative, multi-parameter process, that leads to countless furniture arrangement solutions you have never imagined before. Almost exactly what I needed
This book is very useful as far as it goes. It has a great deal of information about required clearances between different bits of furniture, which is probably 90% of what I bought it for. You can tell it was written by an architect, as furniture arrangements are mostly considered in plan, with the emphasis on function and circulation, rather than aesthetic considerations. At one point, the author submits alternative plans for the same room, and asks 'which do tou think works best, and why?' I was rather hoping that the author would tell me which was best and why.I would have liked to see how different elevations worked, with some examination of proportions, why some arrangements simply look better than others, how to make a room look bigger, lighter, etc, but maybe I need a different book for this. There was the odd omission; nothing is said about the optimum height for a bedside table, for instance, although the heights of end tables are discussed. Some very odd terminology is used for furniture, but maybe these were American. Not completely comprehensive, but certainly useful and a worthwhile buy.

Finally! This is THE book!
This book helped me arrive at the perfect "great room" furniture arrangement by looking at zones and traffic patterns.Think outside the box and look at function. Can't praise it enough and what a wonderful tool for both novice and experienced designers! Well worth the cost!
