Ideal for Hard Water Areas
About five years ago I started renovating extensively a house and renewed the entire heating system all the way through. Of course I fitted a boiler and tank but never wired in the immersion heater as I had not had time to get around to it until recently. And of course when I checked the element I found that four years of sitting in water had rendered the resistance so low it would simply trip the main RCD. I wasn't surprised to be honest as submerged heating elements do need to be used regularly to ensure that they remain free from damp affecting the insulation. I work on DSV's where we use electrical heating elements for salt water and it's a constant battle.I could of course put a resistance in line such as a 60w lamp but two reasons for not doing this. Firstly I couldn't find one easily......and secondly I figured that sometimes you have to accept reality and deal with a problem properly. So I bought this. And I specifically bought it because it is titanium which I know works well in hard water (we use them for sea water) and living in Norfolk where the stuff is practically solid it was a no brainer for the few extra quid.It fits as expected and works well which is as it is supposed to be. Mostly though I know that when the weather gets a little colder and the gas heating system is back in use, chances are this heating element will not be used as that much but I'm confident that it will stay in good shape for a while until needed again.Overall this suits my purpose well and is ideal for places like Norfolk where the water is harder than a hard thing on a hard day.

The Heat is On
Expensive compared with copper versions but a must for hard water areas. Bought to replace old Copper one which, although still working, had severely corroded around the top, including the electrical connections and was, in my opinion, speaking as an electrical engineer, downright dangerous. So I bought this beast and got a plumber mate to fit it and I wired it. No problems, it only took about half an hour between us and it worked O.K. There was a bit of fiddling adjusting the thermostat at first but this is quite common. Hot water rises and is drawn from the top and, since the thermostat actually measures the temperature lower down, setting it to the actual temperature you want can result in copious TOO hot water. Generally, set it lower. What readers might like to know is that the 27" heater with 18" thermostat is the standard size for 3' high hot water tanks with top entry immersion heaters. If you have side entry then you need something shorter. We only use it when the boiler is not going and an hour in the morning gives ample hot water for the day with a lagged tank. So I can't really comment on longevity yet and hence 4*. Time will tell if it warrants 5.

Quite honestly Tesla are junk
They have a high failure rate and tend to trip RCDs. The plastic cover is not fit for purpose as when the nut is done up you can still lift the cover sufficiently to stick something in/touch live parts. Definitely to be avoided if you have children who may be able to access your hot water cylinder. I would recommend a Backer Backersafe Incoloy, Anti-Corrosive Stainless Steel, or Titanium element instead.
