It starts engines and it’s handy for camping
I’ve had this for a couple of years now so have had chance to use it now and again. It started my wife’s (1.4L petrol) engine immediately when the car battery went flat, and again the next day, without a recharge in between. I had less luck trying to start the 2L petrol on a Mazda I had SORNed for two years during the pandemic - but it turned out the battery on that was completely gone (along with the bodywork of the car, sadly). So it definitely works for jump starts but it’s not going to provide you with a miracle. I have also taken this battery on a few camping trips. Its solid, rugged design makes it much better suited to tent life than are those slim portable batteries designed for business trips. It also has a decent torch built-in, and you can never have too many of them when you’re camping. I’d estimate it can recharge a modern iPhone from almost dead to full approx three times along with occasional use as a torch - so it can supply a family for a night or two, provided the kids are round the campfire not hiding in the tents on their iPads. You probably wouldn’t want to use it heavily for camping, as like any battery it may degrade to the point where the primary car start function fails, but it’s a nice bonus. I’m pleased with this purchase. It’s a handy device to keep in the boot of your car at all times and has the bonus capability of providing battery power outdoors. Even if you have other cars around, it’s easier to use this than traditional jump leads: you don’t need to move two cars close enough for the jump leads to reach, or open two car bonnets.

Peace of Mind if your Battery Flat
Good item to have if your car battery goes flat - I have used twice with no problems & it started my car first time - Booster is Portable & Easy to Store in car - Quick & Easy to use - Easy to recharge via USB in car or indoors (while Booster comes with a USB charge lead, make sure it fits your charging ports - I have older car & had to use different USB lead - But it worked fine - Newer cars be ok) - Item delivered quickly & safely packaged - Highly Recommend if you'd like peace of mind in the event of a flat battery...!

Clips on the unit
When I was looking at options for this type of product I read a number of reviews saying the clips on this product were hard to open and I was nearly deterred from this particular unit. So I wanted to add that as a not so young woman (nor do I get involved with weight training), but I have not had any problems with the clips. Perhaps I got lucky and / or the manufacturer has made adjustments. The cables are relatively short as many others comment and so there isn't a lot of space to position the clips so do check where your battery is, but I'm not sure or convinced that buyers need to be deterred by the strength needed to open the clips.

Works and will save you a call out someday
This really saves a call out, time and probably money. I just had to use this on a Rav4 hybrid. Worked a little bit differently, in that there is no negative battery terminal (not visible or reachable anyway) and so in that case you connect the black cable to a bolt to earth it. Car instantly came to life. Great tool to have in your car, small, light and compact too. But depending on your car... don't leave it in the boot storage like I did, because the boot door wouldn't open, and I had to crawl over the back seat and do all kinds of yoga to retrieve it. Leaving it under the seat from now on!

It actually works
I have a couple of classic cars so dealing with tired batteries is a regular event. I always carry jump leads which are fine, assuming you can find a friendly passing motorist, one who knows where his/her battery is located (not always obvious), is able to position the car so you can connect the two batteries etc etc. So when I became aware that these power pack type starters were available I was intrigued. Too good to be true surely? Small and light enough to go in a glove box, with the promise of being able to start a car multiple times, even with a totally dead battery. Well, all I can say is, it works! Ironically, it was my daughter’s ‘modern’ - a Kia Picanto - which needed help after a few weeks of lockdown inactivity. Battery low enough that it wouldn’t crank the engine at all. So connect the clamps, plug them into the gizmo, press ‘on’ and start the car as usual. Bingo - first go! I used it in a similar scenario a couple more times. Then today, I had to use it on a really dead battery. Same car, but this time no signs of electrical life at all - the central locking wouldn’t unlock, and turning the key didn’t even produce any dash lights, much less any clicking or starter whirring. Out of interest, I put a meter across the battery - 2.5 volts, so I think this battery (7 years old) is probably a goner. Out with the Noco, connect up, turn the key - nothing. At first I thought it had met its match. Then I remembered that if the battery is really low (below 2 volts says the booklet), it has to be set to manual override. Double check that the cables are connected with correct polarity, press and hold the override button, turn the key - bingo car started first go. Pretty impressive, I thought. The thing had been sitting in the garage for two weeks, still on its original charge from the day I got it, and still showing full charge on its LEDs. There are lots of different makes of this kind of power pack available; I chose this after a bit of internet research. It seems to be a reputable make, and this device is well reviewed elsewhere. Positives: - very easy to use - battery clamps are all metal and very substantial. They taper to a slim point so are easy to attach even if there’s not much space around the battery terminal posts - can be charged from a mains USB charger, or from a car 12 volt socket as you drive along (adapter included) - has a USB output as well, so can be used to charge a phone/tablet, plus a bright LED torch with SOS flashing option. The only downsides I can see: - only one USB out - no 12v cigar-lighter type output to power car accessories - the battery cables are very short, so you have to find somewhere close to the car’s battery to rest the device whilst you go to turn the key This thing will now be coming with me whenever I’m out in an old car. Recommended.

Not great...
I bought this to replace a 6 year old, 500A, £45, no-name brand USB jump starter that was still starting the engine first time but only giving me 2 jump starts before needing to be charged, when it previously managed around 10 jumps. Decided to go for Noco as they are so highly rated but should have listened to the bad reviews.... I got the pack fully charged and tried it out on my 2.0L Diesel which regularly goes flat as something drains the battery and it fails to start if not driven every day- really should get it sorted! The Noco failed to start the car twice in normal mode so I turned on the Boost/override mode. This just about got it started but sounded like it struggled. (I waited about 30 seconds each time before starting the car) When I disconnected the charger I noticed it was almost flat with the red light showing, which was quite surprising as it says up to 20 uses between charges. I re-charged the Noco and tried again 2 days later. It took 2 attempts in normal mode this time and drained the pack to 50%. While the Noco did manage to start my car, I am disappointed with the performance and capacity. No idea how anybody could get 20 jump starts out of this and I really doubt the 1000A claims as my old 500A pack started the engine much faster and more reliably- while also lasting much longer! I did research the Noco jump starters before buying and decided on this GB40 pack over the GBX range as the GB(non X) ones are supposed to hold charge longer and give more jumps per charge, so I would definately not recommend the GBX either based off this experience. The GB40 has also been updated/refreshed but the Amazon listing has some conflicting info- I received the new version which includes a USB-C in/out port and a USB-A out port but no 12V lighter socket port or attachment. It also includes a thin fabric carry pouch (useless), a USB-C to C cable (no charging plug included) and the jump leads, which are short but were fine for me. The older version has 2 USB-A ports (1 in/out the other just output), a USB-A to A cable and a 12V lighter socket charger. The USB-C input is 5V 2.1A so no fast charger needed, pretty much any USB capable of charging will support this nowadays. Battery says it is 24Wh. If charging a phone from the USB port @ 5V 2.1A this would give 4800mAh but you would lose some of that as it wouldn't be 100% efficient so not enough to give a full charge on most modern phones. The jump leads seem high quality and have a strong grip. Connecting the leads to the power pack is not as easy as with other jump starters- have to push it quite hard to get it in, and it is not super clear which way round it is supposed to go in as the hole/plug is round-ish with no obvious markings- you have to look at the shape of the terminals inside the plug and socket and match them up (one is round, the other square). Unfortunately the jump starter I was previously using is no longer being sold so I will have to return the Noco and give another brand a try.

Works Extremely Well When Charged, but Long-Term Battery Drain Limits Emergency Readiness
Overall, I have been very impressed with the NOCO Boost GB40 as an actual jump starter. When charged and ready to use, it has worked reliably for me multiple times over the years and has successfully jumped my vehicle without much trouble. The compact size and portability also make it much more convenient than dealing with traditional jumper cables. The biggest issue I have experienced is long-term battery retention during storage. I would fully charge the unit to 100% and keep it in my trunk specifically for rare emergency situations, but because those situations are thankfully uncommon, I would often discover that the internal battery had completely drained by the time I actually needed it months later. In practice, that means this works best for people who either: regularly maintain and recharge the unit, frequently use it, or own vehicles that commonly need jump starts. If you are expecting to charge it once and forget about it for extremely long periods, you may want to check the battery status more regularly than expected. I also occasionally tried to use it to help other stranded drivers, but the same issue sometimes came up where the unit had already self-discharged from sitting unused too long in the trunk. To be fair, I do not know how much of this is normal lithium battery behavior versus the device itself, especially considering temperature changes inside vehicles over long periods. But it is still something buyers should realistically know before relying on it as a long-term untouched emergency backup. Overall, I still think it is an excellent portable jump starter and a very useful tool when properly maintained and kept charged. I just recommend periodically checking and topping it off instead of assuming it will stay at full charge indefinitely in storage.
