The Book of Common Prayer The Texts of 1549, 1559, and 1662

I found (as I expected) this book very useful. It has three major books(at least from a Church of England point of view) in one volume. I like studying the development of the Book of Common prayer and have wanted the 1559 text for some time. I like it in kindle format because it saves bookshelf space. It is unfortunate that the 1552 text is not included for comparison and completeness. I recommend this book to anyone interested in the history of the Church of England and in England.

I got this for research. One of the characters in my SF novels Starship Home and Starship World is a 16th century English nun and mystic, kidnapped by aliens to be integrated in a starship as its pilot. She was born in 1511 and abducted in 1531 just before Henry VIII stole the monasteries and convents and she speaks Early Modern English, the best models for which are Shakespeare, the King James Bible and Archbishop Thomas Cranmer's translations for the 1549 Book of Common Prayer. Cranmer was a masterly writer and because under Elizabeth I church attendance was compulsory, was one of Shakespeare's earliest literary influences. Catholic convert though I am, rediscovering the language of the Book of Common Prayer has been a total joy.

This is a superb scholarly edition of the Book of Common Prayer, with an excellent introductory essay and extra-ordinarily interesting footnotes to the texts. The book has been beautifully designed and produced by the publisher, Oxford University Press.

In contrast to the other review, I deliberately used this book for worship over a two week holiday. Easy use of bookmarks, 'go to' and searching enabled movement rather faster than (some) page turning, to move around in worship. Switching to a Kindle version of the King James Bible for the readings, using again bookmarks for both morning and evening prayer couldn't have been simpler. The main drawback is getting to the textual notes from the services, easy enough in reverse, however. This is an interesting and useful book.

This is not simply the BCP in three variant forms; it is a comprehensive guide to its textual history and is simply a must for all students of renaissance studies. The introduction and explanatory notes are concise, easy to digest, and informative. One of the OUP's best works.

I was sadly very disappointed with this e-book offering from OUP. The only navigation around its contents that you are offered is amongst the prefatory material and the appencices (all very interesting) and then from the whole of the 1549 text to the 1559 text and on to the 1662 text. Once inside one of the three texts there is no navigation available other than by page turn, inserting your own bookmarks or by searching for certain terms. Certainly, there is no possibility of jumping from Morning Prayer to Evening Prayer or to (let alone amongst any of) the Psalter. This makes the book useless if you had ever thought of using it as a prayer book. Of course, I appreciate that it has not been published with that devotional use primarily in mind but then it is surely also not to be expected that it would be read through, page by page, as if it were (say) a history of the BCP. What a missed opportunity for OUP to show off all the advantagesof e-book versions of their catalogue or, at the very least, to show how navigating them can be as painless as flipping through a hard copy of the book. This is also unfortunate for Mr Cummings since clearly a lot of research and thought and work has gone into producing this very interesting collection of formative BCP texts - I'm not sure how easily available the 1559 text is - and I do very much hope that Amazon doesn't tar the hard copy editions of his book with this negative review based purely on the OUP e-book format. True to form, Amazon have been exemplary in their very prompt refund/cancellation of my purchase of the Kindle version. I remain as committed as ever to the Kindle (and to OUP) but just wish that the publisher could have done more in producing this Kindle version than, as it were, producing one long pdf of the hard copy book.

This was my very first copy of the Book of Common Prayer, and it has proved to be the absolute best. I've purchased three of them over the years — I wore one out completely, keep another at our second home, and use my most recent copy for saying the Daily Office. It's well put together, easy to use, and full of valuable history and supporting information. And it works beautifully regardless of which Anglican (or non-Anglican) tradition you may or may not belong to. I would also recommend pairing this with the KJV by the same publisher.

The book is an historic collection of church documents in the language of 1500s but can be quite a good prayer book and a most interesting reflection on prayer services of the Anglican church. If one is interested in that sort of thing, this book would be a valuable contribution.

If you like slight variations it's endless. Rapidly boring.

For sentimental, literary or devotional purposes this is a landmark work. The exalted prose embraces the mind and the heart. Would there were such writers today.
