The Big Bang Theory: Season 8 [DVD] [2015]

Big Bang year eight
Eighth season of sitcom the Big Bang Theory. If you're reading this and you've not seen the programme before, then go and start with season one. As by now, the amount of continuity and back story means it might not work as a jumping on point if you come in this late.Regular viewers, read on.This contains all twenty four episodes of the season, spread across three dvd's. Each episode runs from eighteen to twenty minutes [approx].The language and subtitle options on the discs are:Languages: English, Castilian Spanish, FrenchSubtitles: English, Castilian Spanish, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, Norwegian, Swedish. There are those who say the show isn't as funny as it was in it's first three years, and the introduction of Amy and Bernadette, plus all the resulting character development has caused that. Those people need to note two things about this season:1: The first episode begins with Sheldon waking up in bed and saying 'Oh! Everything that happened in the past seven years was just a terrible dream. Good.2: BAZINGA!Yes, Amy and Bernadette are once again regular characters who are in all the episodes. And the show keeps trying to develop it's characters and move them forward. That's what happens in real life. People grow, change, move on, and sometimes they're not around anymore. This show tries to reflect that. One real life event means that it has no choice but to deal with that fact in this season, and it has to be said that it does it superbly, in a very touching manner. It does have a good balance, as a season, between the science, the nerdy stuff, and the relationships and character stuff. The season uses Stuart well, keeping him semi regular but giving him situations that make for worthwhile storylines. And ever so slowly, Howard and Bernadette's marriage develops as the former slowly matures. Also as ever, Amy and Sheldon's relationship moves forward gradually. But move forward it does. Jim Parsons doing some of his best work ever as Sheldon does recognise the value of friends and loved ones.It doesn't really succeed quite so well with Raj's girlfriend Emily. She remains a semi regular, and there's never too much to the character. You really wonder if they know what to do with the character. But we do get to see his parents again for the first time in three years. Which is nice. But whilst this is a good solid season of a show still at the top of it's game, it's rather like year seven in that whilst all episodes rate at least eight out of ten, and some are good enough to be nine out of ten shows, none of them stick in the mind quite as long as you might wish. That's largely down to the episode length, which does feel a bit too brief at points.Still, it's a very good season all in all. And whilst this isn't a show that should perhaps run for much longer, it's still delivering the goods whilst it does. The dvd has the following extras:Disc one:2014 comic con panel. The writers and a guest star discuss things and take questions. It runs for twenty seven minutes, but it's a fun watch and the time flies by.Shooting stars: BBT on BBT. A six minute long feature about Billy Bob Thornton's appearance in one episode. Short but fun.Disc two:Constellation prize: Four minutes showing two of the cast and one of the show's creator's on getting stars on the Hollywood walk of Fame. A short but good watch. Here's to you, Carol Ann Susi: A nine minute long and very touching tribute to a sadly departed semi regular cast member.Disc three:It's the BBT superfans!: Eleven minute long look at the trip winners of a contest got to make to the set. Which ends up being very enjoyable viewing.Gag reel: six minutes of outtakes. As ever, a consistently good lot of these. Most such reels are people forgetting dialogue and pulling silly faces, but the Big Bang Theory always manages to make even the former funny.

Brilliant comedy with some actual real life learning included
I love all the big bang series. Not only do you get a great comedy show, pipe down all you 'American comedy is crap twits',but you actually also get to engage your brain and learn. I don't know how many times iv'e finished an episode and went to the internet to look up a scientist/experiment mentioned on the show.

Luxury comedy.
Such a great series. Geek heaven. It's more than that now though. The characters truly have evolved throughout the series, developing relationships and evolving right before our eyes. Could this be the new Friends? I believe it can be. So well made, so funny, really easy to recommend. The only thing that spoils it, is the audience laughter. I don't know what it is, but in the US it seems that every (laugh) single (laugh) word (laugh) is (laugh) funny (laugh). It's maddening.

Nothing excitingly innovative, good continuation of the series.
Still live the BBT. We're on season 8, and you can clearly see some plot lines and some stories are starting to get a bit thin - much like Friends or How I Met Your Mother at a similar point, all of the major arcs have either been finished, are drawing to a conclusion, or are being needlessly stretched. In that sense, like many good sitcoms that went on for a long time, some of it's becoming a bit soap opera ish. This doesn't mean the jokes, the acting, some of the situations, and the references aren't still top notch. It's simply a fact that after 8 seasons, it gets hard to stay fresh and/or original all the time. If you're looking for new and special, you probably won't find it here. If you want to see the continuing story of your heroes/friends/characters you care about, and have some fun, you can definitely watch this without being disappointed. There was a bit of a to do about Penny's changed role, with both her looks and her career changing. Frankly, the ditzy blonde was getting long in the tooth and the new career etc really helped to make the character more interesting again, to introduce new hurdles and new challenges. I do feel it was brought on a bit too sudden and too quickly, but, well, that's TV, I guess.

Geek culture at its very best!!!
Geek culture at its very best!! Fabulous as ever, season 8 is hysterical and heartwarming, kicking off with Leonard and Amy rescuing Sheldon from his train trip "living of the land." The death of Mrs Wolowitz is heartbreaking although the season ends with one of our much loved couples tieing the knot (finally). As always BBT is amazing in all 24 epsidoes of season 8
