Ok, so I've had a slow cooker for years, just sitting in the cupboard in a box. With all the talk recently about 'cost effective cooking', I thought that I would see if I could find a book to tempt me to finally take it out of the box. Firstly, this is a smaller book than I imagined (5.5 x 6.5 inches), and it gets extra points for having a photo of each finished recipe (always a bonus). Instructions are very easy to follow and there is a handy chapter full of hints and tips at the start, something that I found of use. The chapters consist of 'breakfast and light bites', 'meat, poultry and game', 'fish and seafood', 'vegetables' and 'desserts, drinks and preserves'. Whilst I personally feel dishes like 'Mexican Coffee' and 'Porridge' are a bit excessive, the idea of trying the chilled tomato and garlic chutney is very tempting. I like the fact that not only does this book contain recipes that I class as 'traditional for a slow cooker' (stews, lamb shanks etc), it has also given me some ideas for cakes, puddings, curries and the idea of preparing then leaving for hours does appeal, especially during the colder months. I have given this book 3 stars due to only two recipes catching my attention when I first flicked through - usually I am placing numerous sticky-notes highlighting what appeals to me. However, considering the price of this little book and the fact that I have now picked it up again I can see how this book would benefit anyone new to a slow cooker, regardless of your level of ability in the kitchen.

This seems to be a good book if you are a beginner on the slow cooking scene. It has a lot of explanations and know how presented in a clear and understandable fashion for the unpracticed cook like myself. Expats should note though that it is an "English" and not an American cookbook and this is reflected in the recipes.
