Whats the difference between the x2 and x2hr's?

None apart from the name. I own both. Philips changed their manufacturer prior to the release of these and the quality dipped hugely for a while. Many believe the introduction of the X2HR was an effort to get beyond the sudden drop in build quality with a re-label. Having owned and listened to both, I am firmly in this camp. Fortunately the build quality got back to where it should be, and these are a great pair of headphones.

Buying for a desktop pc, what difference will i get by buying dac with these headphones?

So if you have a soundblaster or equivalent then you probably wouldn’t need to buy a DAC. If you’re talking about buying a DAC instead of connecting to the motherboard sound again it depends on the motherboard but assuming you don’t have a top of the range motherboard with top spec sound card you will get a vastly better sound from a DAC. The amount of difference you get will vary wildly on the DAC you buy. A Fiio K3 is a great starting point but if you can push a little more cash to the DAC then something like an iFi Zen DAC will transform your sound over the onboard sound. The differences will be a much more natural sound, clear bass mids and treble. More power (although the X2’s don’t need it so much as they are easy to drive). More detail, less electrical interference, more connectivity options for different headphone types such as balanced ones if you buy a balanced DAC (like the Zen). Just overall everything better.

Can anyone recommend a shorter headphone lead for these, about 1 to 1.2 Metres, of suitable impedence but not overhyped expensive ones.

How long is the warranty on these?

If you're in the EU then it's 2 years manufacturer's warranty no matter what anyone tells you. It's EU-wide law to provide at least 2 years of manufacturer's warranty.
