If I plant irises in this in a mesh basket in my pond, do I have to cover the top with gravel?

It's highly advisable. After all, have you ever seen a marginal plant at an aquatic centre that didn't have an aquatic gravel top? More importantly, make sure you use a hessian liner in the basket to prevent compost / soil seaping out.

Is this for tropical tanks too

Compost can be used in cold water or tropical, not salt, or sand. My plants grow well without compost, they live off the fish droppings which sinks into the gravel and form compost. Plant growth is the best fertiliser, if you need one. Kim

Can I use this in my fish tank?

I've used it in my fishpond, so it should be OK as long as the compost is covered with enough gravel to stop the fish from digging it out and muddying the water!

Some floaters but manageable

Arrived “double bagged” which was a pleasant surprise. Used for pond plant pots, soaked well before submerging in the water but there was some floaty bits but these were easily removed with a repurposed kitchen sieve. From sieving the floaters out no more appeared.
