I’ve been using tracer pencils for years on site and always just accepted their limitations — constantly snapping leads, awkward sharpening, and generally feeling a bit flimsy. This Pica Pencil 3030 is on a completely different level. Yes, it’s more expensive upfront, but it’s genuinely better value in the long run. It just works. The build quality is solid, the mechanism is smooth, and it feels like a proper professional tool rather than something disposable. The sharpener is also miles better than the one you get with tracer pencils. It actually gives you a clean, usable point without chewing through the lead, which makes a big difference when you’re marking accurately. Another small thing I didn’t expect to matter as much — the colour. It’s bright, easy to spot, and I misplace it far less than any of my old pencils. Sounds minor, but on a busy job it saves time and frustration. Overall, once you use one of these, it’s hard to go back. If you’re still using tracer pencils, this will feel like a serious upgrade.

Great design allows for the accurate marking of surfaces through drill holes of 2 plus inches; its thick lead, 2.8mm, makes it less liable to break and more suitable for marking rough surfaces however its built-in lead sharpener allows you to maintain a sharp point for precise marking on smooth surfaces; its cleverly designed clip means it will never accidentally fall out of your pocket; its bright green colour makes it stand out on a workbench; its body feels nice and thick in your hand and of course it is German engineered making it a quality tool.

Use it everyday at the workshop and I love them. Lost my old one I had for 5 years so I bought a new one. Last for ages. Also the different colors you can buy in are a nice bonus.

Clips onto my pockets and its long reach is handy for marking through electrical wiring boxes. Seems to mark on most surfaces. Lead refills can easily break if pushed out of the pen too far. Only need a small amount showing at the nib end. Good useful purchase that cuts down on trying to sharpen a pencil with a Stanley knife.

After wasting my money on cheaper deep hole markers [despite screwing them on securely, the sharpener caps came loose and dropped off to be lost forever and the loading mechanisms failed, rendering them useless] I came a across a review that mentioned PICA as a better alternative. As a professional tradesperson, I use marking tools all day and, after a few months use, I am WELL impressed by this! The scabbard-type holder stays put in the elasticated loop on a small tool-pouch on my work trouser belt - never dropped out yet. The pencil fits snugly into the scabbard so doesn't drop out, but is easy to remove with finger and thumb. The feed mechanism is solid and well made. The leads take a good, sharp point from the sharpener in the tip of the scabbard [no cap to come loose and be lost!] enable accurate marking, but the unsharpened lead is thick & tough enough to use for rough marking on plaster, brick etc. All in all, a very well made and solid piece of kit. My only regret is I didn't discover it years ago!
