Gets the job done but requires patience!
Gotcha! This is a solidly built trap which got the job done. The job: capturing a massive rat that burrowed and gnawed it‘s way through loose brick and mortar to live underneath my house (suspended timber floor). I blocked the mouse hole with some bricks and placed the trap strategically so that the only way ‚out‘ was the trap, which I covered with some branches and didn’t touch anymore. And turns out you really have to be patient. These rats are smart and even as the only exit it took rat a full week to decide to take the bait (peanut butter) and as I was about to give up and remove the trap I heard it rattling outside. The was trapped inside and couldn’t get out despite trying hard. The metal cage seems to be too durable even for an animal this size and could withstand easily. With the metal plate on top the handle was easy and safely reachable despite the wild animal inside. Later I used a long metal hook which I had lying around to safely open the cage and release the rat into the wild. A tool or built-in mechanism to safely open the trap while an animal is inside is the only thing missing and would have been a plus. TLDR: trap was easy to set up, did its job well (you have to be patient) and was safe to handle with the animal inside.

Works, but is a bit faffy
Irritated that i had to buy 2 of these at once - so note to seller - one at £9 is ok - having to buy 2 when you just want one - not very happy., but anyway. These are robust, sturdy, well made - however setting them is a bit faffy, and them unsetting themselves whilst you're trying to position them is the biggest issue. The 'clip' is too easily released and i just ended up spilling any bait through the floor (the bait plate is just flat - and our rats like bird seed so we've been using that - the two here are not compatible) due to each time it tried to position the trap it released the very loud very tightly sprung door. We did catch one rat the first day we put it out though once i'd tiptoed away from the uber sensitive trap, however, all the other rats are now steering well clear ofit partially i think because it made such a loud noise when it was sprung. The spring and clipping mechanism could be better designed. Also we have one of the other styles with a small elevated hole and a 'none return' flap which i feel happier about leaving out all night. We get squirrels and the occasional cat in our garden in the early morning (clearly not often enough to disturb the rats!) but if a squirrel got in there i fear his tail could be badly damaged by the strength of the door snapping shut as he is longer than the trap of course with tail .... and a cat could end up with an injured back for the same reason. Sooo i think if you're using indoors or in an outbuilding where cats and squirrels - long tail larger species can't access - these will work - but i'm still wary of using outside unless i can confine the area - and thats hindered by the sensitivity of the door closer/release. Anywhere niche i've tried to snickle it into - it just snaps shut and i'm back to delicately trying to place it down on the ground and gently nudge it ... and then BANG door closes and i'm back to square one.

Works, but need patience as rat, initially skeptical of the trap.
Catchability/Effectiveness: It took two weeks of a rat being very skeptical of the trap, but finally caught it on a very wet/windy night. Used sunflower seeds. Durability: The rat went frantic and chewing at the cage, when caught in the trap. The cage stood up to this with no damage done. It was in the cage for 40 minutes until I noticed it on my cctv camera. Covering the cage with a small builders bag, helped calm it down until it was relocated the next day, to a quiet wood over 2 miles away. Along with a little food to help it survive a few days until it established itself (Porrige oats, walnuts, bird seed, chopped apple and a boiled egg with the shell slightly cracked) Safety: The rat was unharmed, a good humane trap for those who don't want to kill them as they are just trying survive and being opportunists. Size: I was dubious as to whether it was big enough for a rat/would work/waste of money. But glad I bought it. A good buy. Just needs determination and patience. Baffle on bird table to stop any future rats being lured by bird seed. Poor hedgehogs won't have any food left out as I'd seen the rat eating it. Not until I can figure out how to feed the hedgehogs, but not the rat.

It's okay but the door failed in cold weather
15 Jan 2013 review - trap purchased March 2012 First thoughts - a nice trap and fast delivery. Thank you CostMad-UK. But I cannot catch any rats ! Have tried many different types of bait and only catch birds (which I quickly release). There are rats around, as we live next to farm land and wheat fields, but they seem to avoid this trap. Often the bait (meat, peanut butter, fat, salami, ham etc) is gone and I assume it has been eaten by mice (or very very clever rats using "sky hooks"). The trap is well made and very lightly set, and will slam shut from the lightest of pressure on the pedal. I bought this trap in March 2012, and have although it appears generally well made it may have a flaw in the design of the door assembly. In cold weather a short while ago the black plastic vertical slider/retaining piece failed. Initially the door would not close as both plastic vertical sliders changed shape (curved inwards) in the cold weather. I tried to ease the left hand plastic vertical slider a little and it snapped off. I first advised the importer at Thetford (STV International Ltd) who very quickly replied that I could have a replacement by return if I returned the trap to them with my Amazon proof of purchase. Thank you to STV Thetford for your symathetic email. However, the cost of p/p to STV (unrefundable) is some £7.00, which is a little too high. I then contacted the seller of this £13.35 rat trap two days ago - - CostMad-UK - - asking if they would replace the trap and cover my p/p - - but no reply so far. Perhaps I am being too optimistic here.... So - - I decided to repair the trap myself with a small piece of plastic 90° angle strip and a few self-tapping screws. It took only 30 minutes to fix, and the trap works fine now. But if anyone has any advice about other reliable rat bait for the trap I would be grateful.

Good Hedgehog Trap
Looks good, nice and sturdy, well made but as a rat trap a complete fail. Initial purchase was for a relative who had a rat appearing in her garden, she stopped using it after a week after catching 2 Hedgehogs. So I brought it home as I had spotted a rat coming out to eat left over bird seed, So its been a couple of weeks of setting the trap, baiting with Peanut butter, finding the bait had gone but the trap was still set, I think I`ve replaced the bait about 8 or 9 times, during which the trap set once ,no bait left but no rat, then yesterday I too caught a Hedgehog.

Works well - but be patient.
We have a rat in our loft for a couple of months (confirmed by placing a WiFi camera up there to monitor) very clever rat who had figured out how to dodge classic snap traps, these came close a couple of times but the sneaky rat ducked at the last millisecond avoiding the kill bar and making off with some free liquorice allsorts! I bought this as I thought we would try a cage trap as a last attempt at trying to sort the problem ourselves before calling someone in, as poison left up there for over a month hasn't worked (so far) either, but they've been loving munching on it. Placed the trap up there the day it arrived but secured the door open with a cable tie and baited it to allow the rat to get comfortable with entering it before setting it for real. After seeing the rat visit and take the bait a couple of times I removed the cable tie and waited. It took three days for it to return to the trap, but it finally caught the rat tonight, so I'm pleased to say that the trap performed perfectly. Triggered instantly when the rat stepped on the trigger plate and the springs on the door are strong enough that it couldn't let itself out. Felt confident carrying the trap by the handle with the solid plate on the top protecting your hands from the understandably scared critter within. Now you can't just release rats into the wild on others land, as you're just moving on a problem to a new area, so had to figure out a way to humanely dispatch the caught rat (baking soda, vinegar and storage container to act as a makeshift gas chamber was the answer to that so not the most pleasant of evenings truth be told, but rowena rat was sent to heaven swiftly and without struggle) I will be placing this back in the loft with more bait as I suspect we likely had more than one squatter up there, but I'm very happy with how it has performed. It was well sized for the adult female rat I caught and I believe it would just as easily catch a slightly larger rodent too. All in all a very sturdy, solidly built and effective trap. Instructions were clear enough, though setting it was a little fiddly at first, but once you manage it once, it's very simple to repeat - just don't plop the trap down too hard once you've set it or it will slam shut when you do.

Users need to be inventive.
With our trap, we had rats entering it and just taking the supposedly poison bait we put in there (octagonal pink Rodine blocks). They were doing quite well on the bait so far as we could tell, unless they were just using it as furniture. The pressure plate just wasn't being trodden on (or trodden on heavily enough). The trap was placed in a position that nothing other than the target species - rats - could get into it via the door opening, although it is possible that a mouse could enter through the mesh. The visitors weren't mice, though, because they would then have to eat *all* the bait, because the bait was disappearing and doesn't fit through the mesh until it's almost completely eaten. The rats were tunnelling under a gravelboard from our neighbour's garden, where they (well, the neighbours at least) have a shed raised on battens - so no surprises as to where the nest(s) are. I improvised. The octagonal bait blocks are just wide enough to hold the trigger lever at the right point to hold the sprung door up - it's also slightly more hairtrigger as a result. So the pressure plate isn't restraining the trigger lever, the bait block is. Since the rats weren't eating the bait in-situ I figured they'd want to remove it. When they start tugging it back to their nest, wham goes the door. Job (almost) done. An early experiment involved placing a few small stones on the pressure plate to try to make it more sensitive, figuring that if a rat wasn't heavy enough (they can lean quite far forward and stay off the pressure plate while taking bait) then pre-weighting the pressure plate might mean a smaller extra weight makes the difference, but that wasn't working. Another option would be to suspend bait from the top on a wire, compelling the rat to struggle to get it a little more. I found that using the width of a bait block was enough to do the trick. We went weeks with no catches and fatter rats thankful for the bait we were leaving (they evidently liked the poison), but since hitting on the bait-block as the trigger for the trap, we've caught a couple in short succession. Doing it this way also seems to make the trap easier to place, since unless the bait itself moves (and its being held there by the trigger arm), the trap won't spring. It's then up to the rat to want to carry it away, at which point, game's over.

Top Lebendfalle
Zurück an Amazon.
