Easy to program, easy to see and use. Well worth the money.
Bought for my father-in-law who has real trouble seeing and operating a Humax PVR. I was hoping it would make things a bit easier for him.Packaged well but in a plastic clamshell that needs cutting open, you get the control, a lanyard and some beefy instruction manuals. You need a screwdriver to open the back to insert batteries, which means they aren't going to fall out, but does make it a bit harder for the intended recipient to replace them if need be. At least it's a captive screw, so won't fall on the floor when you open it, never to be seen again!Operation couldn't be simpler. There are two power buttons at the top (TV and PVR/VCR/DVD or whatever you want). Press and hold the TV power button while pressing the 'MUTE' button at the bottom left. The LED will flash quickly now. Just press the button you want to reprogram (i.e. 'Volume Up') then get your other remote, point it at the front of this one and press the corresponding button. The LED flashes twice slowly, then goes back to fast mode for you to repeat for another button. When finished, press the TV power button for a while and it turns learning off. That's it. It took a couple of minutes to program the TV and Humax PVR. I used the left button for play and the right button for stop. I programmed the source button to be EXIT. I even used my brother printer Brother PT1000 P-Touch Labelling System to label the buttons to make it easier, and so far they have stayed on.You can program from a code to say which product it's going to control. That's good if you've lost or broken the original remote, but I've not used that as I didn't need it.My father-in-law now has use of his TV again, and I'm thinking of replacing his other small TV remote with one as well. It means you can prevent the "I pressed a button and the picture's gone" phone calls, which is good for everyone!

Very handy for controling multiple devices
I'll start off by saying that I haven't tuned it by the specific instructions for any brand, I tuned it by existing remotes. I won't be able to comment on my first point. I would expect it to work with most brands. The manual is the biggest I've seen come with any product. May be very simple to follow the instructions for those who bought the remote because they wanted something simple, but it should be relatively easy for someone to set it up for them.I use it with an audio amplifier. I only used 5 buttons on the original remote (which I already bought a replacement for). That remote is so cheap that the volume buttons require to be pushed really hard once you've had the remote for a year or two. I just use two inputs so use the + and - channel buttons for them. Normally would be used to change channel on TV, but this works just as well. Then use the volume and mute buttons as you would expect. My amplifier only has a physical button for power, so obviously can't use the remote for that.Due to the amount of buttons spare, I also use it for my HDMI switch which has 5 inputs and a power on off function. I use the arrow keys and ok button as buttons to select inputs 1 - 5 depending on what device I want to view on my monitor. Then one of the power buttons to turn the switch off. This puts my monitor into standby so effectively is a bit like the monitor being powered off by the remote.I use the other button for another totally different purpose. I have a wall plug socket that has and infra-red extender on it simply to power the device plugged in on and off. In my case, that is a fan. If you program the device to turn on and off with any other remote, then teach this remote that signal, you can then control that socket with this remote too.I'll also add that one reviewer mentioned that when programming the buttons to control a motorised volume dial on an amplifier (which is also my case), they experienced the remote causing it to do large steps in volume which wasn't very precise. There is in fact a solution to this as I also experienced this initially. While tuning the remote for the volume controls and it is in the teaching mode, rather than doing a quick press on the remote you want it to learn from, press and hold it for over a second. The difference this makes is surprising. If you teach this learning remote with a quick press, it seems to learn it as a fixed duration when you press it. This results in consistent length signals that the remote sends out when you press it, which is what results in big steps for the volume control. Even if you very briefly press it, the result is the same. It also doesn't register a press and hold (that should keep moving the dial) very well. However, if when teaching the remote you hold the button down for over a second, the remote then sends out the signal for however long you press the button. Weather that is very brief, or pressed and held for 5+ seconds, it works as you would expect. The only negative which I could see being annoying for some is having a screw to undo the battery cover. I myself quite like the idea as it has no chance to accidentally come off. But it really will make things more complicated for those who want a more simple remote. Due to the way this remote works, it will get through batteries quicker than your average remote. If people put in carbon zinc batteries (often suggested for remotes) and use it a lot, they likely will need to be replaced several times over it's life. Given this remote is targeted for those who want things simpler, I think the screw on back is a very odd choice. The screw is also a random non standard phillips size that doesn't fit any head properly and is very soft metal.

It's nearly quite good
My Mum has dementia and I wanted a simple control to help her be able to turn on the TV and her tevo box, alter the volume and choose the channel. The TV was really easy to sync with the control but I had a bit of a problem with the virgin tevo box and had to use the codes to do it. The other thing I couldn't do was to programme one of the keys to go through the guide page at a time instead of line by line. The control itself is nearly well designed but the channel navigation is by using a cross shaped key with the OK button in the middle. Unfortunately the key is black on a black background and the "arrows" are also black. This makes it very difficult for mum to see as a result of the effects of dementia. It would have been so much better if the arrows were coloured or the keys were. I have had to resort to print stickers on it.

Very good product
Worked exactly as I had hoped. I used this to assist my elderly father who has poor eyesight. The product recommended by the RNIB would not suffice as it was only for a TV and would not allow access to record and subsequently watch what you have recorded, just too few buttons. I worked out that this had just the right amount, more than the aforementioned product, but far less than the one supplied with my dad's BT YouView(Humax) box.I mapped the buttons in about 10 minutes, and it just works, providing access to the power, guide, recording etc.If anyone needs assistance, I can provide the mappings I performed.
