Was there a recent design change? I bought this in Jan 2017 and my series 4 is a tad too big for it to show the battery indicator on the top right.

No, it has not changed. It was not designed with the series 4 watch in mind and that watch has a bigger display than the series 3, so no, the new watch does not fit properly. Perhaps they will come out with one that fits the series 4.

So i bought one of these for my series 0 like 2 years ago. will my new 44mm series 4 fit too?

Just got the new 44mm series 4 watch. It does *not* fit in this stand. You can force it in so it charges, but it’s not ideal.

Will this work with an external battery or a powerbank?

IF the Apple Watch charger (USB-A, USB-C) plugs into an external power bank with sufficient wattage, sure it will work. But you can't put anything but a proper Apple Watch charger IN this stand.

Any plans to make a new version that doesn’t crop the screen on the new 44mm watches? If its coming I will wait, if not I’ll buy something else.

We currently do not have plans on redesigning the stand.
