Expensive but very practical and worth the extra.
I used to use the mushroom boxes to collect bits for the compost but I was having to go and empty them up to three times a day. This is much better. It holds a good amount of vegetable waste and trips to the heap now happen once every other day.I have not used the Joseph Joseph bags, just the 10 litre compost bags from Tesco. Once I'd got the knack of fitting them tidily and gathering the excess to poke through the hole at the back, the cheapo bags work fine.I wanted a rectangular bin as I work on a butchers' trolley and was sweeping all the waste straight into the mushroom boxes with the back of my knife or a sponge. Old habits die hard and a few times I have tried holding the box in the same way, but the top rim that covers the bag edges comes off - with disastrous results as the rest of the box, and its contents, crashes to the floor. I am now sweeping onto a small chopping board and scraping that into the bin. The rectangular shape is good for that. The bin is a good squat shape, no chance of it toppling over. The lid stays up fine but I will not be putting this through the dishwasher just in case I end up with the same lid problems others have had. It's easy enough to wipe out and doesn't seem to get very dirty at all. I have found some condensation in the bin underneath the bag but that is easily wiped with a bit of kitchen roll.I have no complaints about the handle either. It seems fine. The charcoal filter works really. It holds in smells completely, even the obnoxious smell of banana skins stays inside. I did think that once this filter wore out I would cut a chunk of cooker hood filter to use instead but it works so well and seems to be lasting ok so I might splash out on the correct filters.Just for the sake of testing it thoroughly I have removed the filter and put it back. I struggled until I realised that you release the clip underneath and push up so the filter cover pops off the top. I find that I only need to push one clip and do not need to squeeze the two together. All in all, a well designed product that does the job extremely well.

compact, practical, stylish -> could be a perfect solution for you too...
It took me ages to make up my mind about the choice of a little waste container to put on my worktop. This J & J waste container ticked all the boxes for me, except the price box! I finally realized if placed on the right hand side of my sink, not far from my dark grey and stainless steel kettle and toaster by Breville, the dark grey plastic and the stainless steel handle of the J & J compost container would match perfectly. I have to admit this was the last reason that made me go ahead with the order, (though not the main reason!) but I was still thinking the price was a bit high.I must say I am now DELIGHTED with the practical and stylish result on my worktop! Worth every penny of it!Liner bags? Easy to notice the way of fixing the liner bags was very well thought of. Even the bags I had (a bit too big), worked. I will eventually shop around at Amazon to buy the proper size of J & J liners for it.This little compost container corresponds perfectly to my needs. I have already got a dual Brabantia kitchen bin on the kitchen floor. It has 2 sections - one of which is for all our garden compost. We are vegetarian, we always make fresh soup and we eat lots of fruit & veg so, we get lots and lots of peelings going straight into that bin. When full, it's emptied into our large compost bins at the end of the garden.I needed a small size compost container on my worktop (instead of using a salad bowl covered with a large plate!!!) to fill up with items connected with food I do NOT put in my garden compost (bits of cooked food, cheese rinds, daily peelings of citrus fruit, large stones from avocados (take years to decompose!) & stones from peaches and apricots, plus coffee filters & tea bags). The Council give us a sort of good size brown bucket to fill up with stuff for garden compost + bits of cooked foods and whatever you don't want to dump into your own garden compost -- but all must be put in biodegradable bags.No place on my kitchen floor for this brown squarish bucket, and it is much too big (and ugly) to put on my worktop! I keep it in the garage. The "bucket" in question gets emptied once a week at the same time as our general rubblish bins. Every 5 or 6 days, I empty the contents of my little J&J container into that brown bucket. Perfect solution for me.I now could not do without my J&J compact waste container, sitting nicely on my kitchen worktop, next to my sink, looking great with other accessories, and doing a much much better job than my old salad bowl covered with a plate! A liner bag gets filled within just about a week and it never ever smells. I feel I have now completed all my efforts towards the recycling of food, in a very satisfactory and very happy way!

Compact and well made
This is a lovely food waste bin. I like the colour, it’s well made and sturdy. It also has an odour vent with a filter. I would recommend.

Intelligent kitchen waste management if you have a garden composter
Like most (not quite all) designs from Joseph Joseph, this compost caddy is a sturdy, well-made and well-thought-out design, strong and stable in use and the perfect size: large enough to be useful but small enough to be never in the way, and to need regular emptying. The caddy comes in a choice of four tasteful colours and is in two parts: the main container with a free-swinging chrome loop handle, and the separate hinged lid (with a built-in anti-odour filter) which helps to secure the biodegradable liner as you re-fit it to the main container. Everything is chunky and stylish, and satisfying to use. It’s strong and easy to clean, as all the internal surfaces are moulded round and smooth. The only minor downside is that the built-in filter is an unnecessary complication if you empty it every day, and the price is at the premium end of the scale. But it’s good value nevertheless because it’s so well made it will last for years.

Satisfied customer
Really pleased with this product. It was a little expensive but well worth it. Not as tall as the one supplied by the local council which is just what I wanted. Fits great below the window sill. Found it a bit difficult to squeeze both the levers to remove the lid to fit the filter as others mentioned in reviews but hoping it will get easier with use. Very sturdy and looks good. Would recommend paying the extra

Love it
This was a great purchase. It looks nice in the kitchen and is small enough to fit on the counter top. It keeps the smell in as long as the filter is replaced when it should be. I would recommend using the Joseph Joseph bin bags designed for this, because the ones we got from Asda and Sainsburry's were always way too big for it, but their own one is the perfect size.
