Bought for my grandson's sixth birthday coming soon. He enjoys the original setso he will enjoy the expansion set.

These are expensive toys but worth every penny. My ASD loves building with magna tiles.

Great for my Grandson's imagination

I love Magna Tiles and they are my child's all-time favourite toy. With that said, I was slightly disappointed by a couple of things about this expansion set. First of all, I was disappointed by the price/piece ratio of this expansion set, which contains four pentagon shapes and four diamond shapes. At the price I paid (£19.99), this works out at £2.50 per piece. This is double the price-per-piece that you would pay if you bought the original 48-piece set at £59.99. The second slight let-down is that the diamond shapes are exactly the same size as a diamond made from two of the small triangles in the original Magna-Tiles pack, so they don't really add much imaginative possibility to the set. The pentagons are great and really add to the scope of what you can make with the Magna-Tiles. I would have loved a second shape that was equally distinct and different. With that said, please don't let this review put you off Magna-Tiles. They are really amazing and have been a firm favourite from age two to nearly four years old, with new possibilities that evolve and develop with the stage that the child is at. But unfortunately this particular expansion pack does not seem as good value as the other packs.

I feel the same as the previous reviewer - great idea but expensive and the diamond shape could be something a bit more exciting. My sons (now 3 and 5) have been playing with their Magna Tiles for over 2 years now and they are BY (very) FAR the best investment we have made toy wise. They play with their Magna Tiles every single day and as previously said it's one of those intelligent and creative toys that evolves as the child grows. Our 5 year old loves to use them to make houses/things for his soft toys and also mixes them with his Legos and other toys. They just never get bored of them. We always take a bag full of them whenever we go away as we know it will keep them entertained whatever happens. Our 1 year old daughter is now starting to stack these up. It would be nice to have a girly version by the way, maybe something sparkly, to go with the colours, black and ICE that we already have.

There's nothing wrong with the pentagons and diamonds, but they don't combine that well with the pieces in the other sets--or maybe there just aren't enough of them in this "additional" set.

I was nervous when I read the reviews saying that this expansion set doesn't offer much in the way of new creative possibilities. And after buying one set, I was worried that these shapes might indeed just be novelty items that would only get limited attention (cough cough shape mags cough cough). But then I realized that the problem is that having only four pentagons and four diamonds really is not enough to make interesting shapes. So I doubled (tripled) down and got two additional sets and WOW, these are some GREAT SHAPES that have really TRANSFORMED how our kids play with Magna-Tiles! They now make all sorts of interesting structures (castles, houses, bridges, towers, etc.), but no less important they are also really exploring geometric shapes for their own sake. The first thing we did once we had all 12 pentagons was to make a dodecahedron, and it was AWESOME. And since three diamonds fit together to make a pretty sturdy hexagon, having three sets means that we can have hexagons of a single color, which has been super fun. We've spent hours going through the list of "Johnson Solids" on Wikipedia to see what we can make, and we're now branching out to explore some really crazy stuff (like what my five-year-old daughter calls her "hexa-penta-square-ahedron," which turns out to be of interest to mathematicians as a "6-5-4 near-miss acrohedron"). Even my two-year old is having tons of fun with the shapes (his favorite is Johnson Solid #63, the "tridiminished icosahedron"). Yes, buying three sets was pricey. It was a risk. But it's the best money I've spent on kids toys in a long time. I think the reviews warning that the angles and shapes aren't easy to work with are missing the point. Having new angles and shapes means that the kids really need to think in new ways about what they can build. They force you to abandon the familiar world of 90-degree angles and to branch out in new directions—literally! (For comparison, we also have the rectangle-and-big-square expansion set, which offers more obvious avenues for expanded play. We like it, but one set of those seems like enough.)
