Nicholas Lyndhurst stars as accidental time traveller Gary Sparrow in the classic BBC sitcom Goodnight Sweetheart. The show, written by Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran, became an instant hit when it was broadcast twenty years ago and with its brilliant mix of comedy and drama, has gone on to become a firm favourite with fans all over the world. Meet Mr Gary Sparrow, just an ordinary bloke with an extraordinary life; almost a devoted and attentive husband and a sometimes loyal and dependable best friend. By day, a very bored and uninspired TV repairman but by night, an accidental time traveller extraordinaire. Among the anonymous streets of Whitechapel you will find a strange alley called Duckett s Passage. It looks like any other alleyway, but for Gary Sparrow it leads to a war torn London, to barrage balloons and the Blitz, and in particular, to a little pub called The Royal Oak, to a lonely barmaid called Phoebe...Special Features: Episode commentaries from creators Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran and writers Gary Lawson and John Phelps. Exclusive interviews with Laurence Marks, Maurice Gran, Christopher Ettridge, Dervla Kirwan, Emma Amos, David Benson and Elizabeth Carling. Review: Nostalgic Time-Travel Comedy at Its Best - Goodnight Sweetheart: The Complete Collection is a must-have for fans of British comedy and time-travel storytelling. This 11-disc box set includes all six series of the beloved show, plus some bonus features that are a treat for long-time viewers. Nicholas Lyndhurst shines as Gary Sparrow, a man juggling life in 1990s London and 1940s wartime Britain, thanks to a mysterious time portal. The series blends heartfelt drama with laugh-out-loud humor, exploring themes of love, identity, and responsibility. The supporting cast, including Michelle Holmes, Dervla Kirwan, and Elizabeth Carling, bring depth and charm to their roles. The quality of the episodes is good, and the DVD menu is straightforward to navigate. However, some episodes could use remastering, as the visuals occasionally show their age. That said, the nostalgic appeal and timeless humor more than make up for it. Whether you're revisiting the series or discovering it for the first time, this box set is a delightful journey through time and an essential addition to any classic TV collection. Review: Let destiny decide! - I never got to finish watching this when it was released on TV, so when it came out on DVD I decided I best buy it and find out what exactly happened to Gary Sparrow in the end! When I first saw it advertised on TV, I was worried that I wouldn't be able to see Gary as Gary and instead, see him always as Rodney Trotter, but Nicholas Lyndhurst isn't one of Britain's best and most loved actors for no reason - there wasn't a sign of Rodney - it was all Gary!! The concept is brilliant, as is the storyline for each episode - though it did get a little weak with regards to some of the later series. They managed to pull it back for the final series though and the ending was quite sad in some ways, but also inevitable - you can't travel back and forth through time and live a double life forever can you? At some point in time, you have to choose and if you don't, fate/destiny does it for you!! The characters were all brilliant - most of the time I felt really sorry for Ron and there were moments when I could have slapped Yvonne - but this is what makes this series so memorable and the characters so real. After I'd finished watching it, I found myself absent-mindedly wondering how Gary was getting on in the 1940s! Such is the power of TV and clever acting. I preferred Elisabeth Carling's portrayal of Phoebe to Dirvla Kirwan's, though she was also brilliant in it. The actors do change half way through - the character of Yvonne, played by Michelle Holmes in the first few series, is replaced by Emma Amos in the latter, but this is, for the best part, unnoticeable and you soon start to believe that they've always been the same from the start. Sometimes when series change their actors, it has an adverse affect on one's enjoyment of it, but not in this case, so don't be put off by this. For anyone who has never seen 'Goodnight Sweetheart' and is thinking they might like to - then do. It's brilliant and timeless - one you can watch again and again.

Let destiny decide!

Brilliant throughout! I loved it.
Though rightfully classified as a sitcom, "Goodnight Sweetheart" has enough drama and suspense to hold virtually any audience. Nicholas Lyndhurst is very engaging as Gary Sparrow, a 1990s husband who stumbles upon a time-travel portal in London's East End. He finds himself transported back 53 years to The Blitz and is attracted to a lovely barmaid named Phoebe. Realising that he can pass freely from one era to another at will, he begins living a double life. In the 1940s, he is armed with the foreknowledge of what wartime events will happen when, thus convincing those in his adopted world that he is a secret agent for military intelligence. In the 1990s, he sets up shop by dealing in WWII artifacts. Modern-day pal Ron (the only person aware of Gary's chronological duplicity) contributes his advice and also his printing skills, supplying the time traveller with a nice cache of fivers for his trips to the past. Gary's wife in the 1990s, Yvonne, becomes suspicious of his frequent disappearances, but Gary is quick enough to satisfy her curiosity without resorting to an outright admission of the truth. "Goodnight Sweetheart" is a marvellous romp through time and marital relationships, touching upon everything in such disparate topics as the war, modern electronics, adultery, bigamy, choosing between two loves, care not to disturb history, love for a son (past and present), multilayered nightmares, pop music, the Blair Babes, and even Bill and Monica. Gary Sparrow becomes an unlikely player in world events, glimpsing Winston Churchill and rubbing shoulders with such personalities as Clement Attlee, George Formby, and Noel Coward. Zelig-like, he comes to appear on modern television (WWII newsreel) and in a modern book (photographed alongside Noel Coward). I recommend "Goodnight Sweetheart" with unbridled enthusiasm. The premise is so intriguing that you will be hooked early on, and it is a fascinating and often hilarious ride for all of its 58 episodes. The fact that two of the major female characters undergo actress changes halfway through the six series is only of momentary concern, for the new cast members handle their roles with aplomb, and I quickly began to enjoy them nearly as much as their splendid predecessors. Buy this set. You will not be disappointed.

Comédie. Histoire d'une double vie pour un personnage entre deux époques, le blitz de Londres et les années 90 Attention c'est en VO non sous-titrée. Il faut s'accrocher. Pour les super bons en anglais.

Goodnight Sweetheart is a very funny British comedy, about a time traveler who goes back to the war time. Somehow Garry changes the past.

I quickly fell in love with this series after I saw one episode of it on Dailymotion a few months ago, so I did a quick search on Amazon to see if a DVD was available, and here I am writing this review. It took nearly 2 months for The Complete Collection to get here, but I anticipated a long delay considering the temporary state of affairs we're in now, and Rarewaves-Imports did give a disclaimer, so I don't blame them at all for that, and I'm sure once the Pandemic is over, the shipping time will get back to normal. I watched several episodes, and a few of the interviews so far, and they are terrific, so I have lots more exciting stuff to look forward to. "Goodnight Sweetheart" is definitely one of my favorite TV sitcoms now, it even has a few moments that tuck at your heartstrings (at least it did mine). I'm truly happy I found this DVD collection on Amazon.
