Title: A Multi-Year Household Favorite! Engaging for Tiny Pups and High-Energy Hounds 🐾🧠
🐶🧩 I originally purchased the Outward Hound by Nina Ottosson Dog Brick (Level 2) two years ago as a Christmas gift for my puppies, and it remains one of the best enrichment investments I’ve made. If you’re looking for a way to keep your dogs mentally sharp, this is a must-have for your toy box. ✅ Why This Puzzle is a Keeper: • Universal Appeal Across Breeds: What impressed me most is how this toy bridges the gap between different sizes and temperaments. It was a perfect, engaging challenge for my toy breed puppy, yet it also completely occupied an energetic Beagle who had never tried a puzzle toy before. It’s rare to find one design that suits both so well. • Lasting Engagement: Even though my dogs have now progressed to more complex Level 3 and Level 4 "Expert" puzzles (like the MultiPuzzle), the Dog Brick remains a firm favourite. They still get excited every time I bring it out, proving that "intermediate" doesn't mean they'll outgrow the fun. • Smart "Nose Work" Design: The puzzle features three mechanics: flip-top lids, sliding red blocks, and removable white bones. I love that the white bone bricks have tiny scent holes - this allows the dogs to smell exactly where the treats are, keeping them motivated and focused on the task. • The Perfect 3-in-1 Challenge: The design features three distinct obstacles: flip-lid compartments, sliding tiles, and removable bone bricks. It keeps them guessing and using their nose and paws in different ways to find their rewards. • Proven Durability: After two years of frequent use, it’s still in great shape. It has provided hours of engagement, making it a high value-for-money investment. The weak point are the plastic bones, which could easily be mangled by an enthusiastic chewer so I recommend vigilance on the part of pet guardians. The plastic case is sturdy and, most importantly, easy to clean. I just hand wash it with warm, soapy water after a session, and it’s ready for the next day. • Safe Materials: As a cautious pet owner, I appreciate that it’s made from food-safe materials and is BPA, PVC, and phthalate-free. I don't love plastic toys, but no reasonable alternatives come to mind for this particular puzzle. 💡Helpful Tips for Pet Parents • Because this is an intermediate toy, some dogs might try to chew the removable white bones. I recommend supervising them during play and removing the toy once the treats are gone to ensure it stays in good condition. • If your dog is a "puzzle pro" and finds this too easy, try the "Frozen Puzzle" trick! Mix some wet food with water or bone broth, pour it into the compartments, and freeze it. This turns a 10-minute game into a much longer-lasting summer treat! ✅ Final Verdict: Two years later, this remains a staple in our home. Whether you have a tiny toy breed or a determined hound, this puzzle is a fantastic way to bond and provide necessary mental stimulation. Highly recommended for any dog's collection! 🐾❤️

Great activity
My dog loved this. An adult dog, he was unwell and I wanted some stimulating activities for him. He had so much fun with this. I’d hide 2/3 different types of treats and he’d find his favourites first. Robust quality, good size for any dog. Attractive design and easy to clean.

Great for an intelligent glutton
Bought this to keep her distracted for more than 3o seconds for her breakfast and it’s been excellent. The quality and plastic is designed to pop out if she stands on it rather than snap, and altogether well designed. The pieces feel sturdy, and it keeps my dog genuinely engaged. What’s interesting is that my dog pretends it’s difficult when people are watching, but if you leave her alone with it she’ll calmly work through it and have it emptied in about 20 minutes. That tells me it’s doing its job properly and actually making her think. After about a month of use she’s clearly learned the patterns, so we’re planning to rotate it with a higher-level puzzle to keep things challenging. Would happily buy again. --edit-- It's been 3 months and she still uses it, doesn't take her long now but we wlare starting to rotate it with another kit. Unfortunately she did love the white bones a bit too much, at first it started with her picking them up and hiding them around the house or sleeping with her hoarde of plastic bones in her bed. If it stayed like that it would be fine, but yesterday she just ate one and there's not much of it left now. Thankfully you can buy replacements which is nice so I don't have to rebuy the entire kit.

Good for smaller dogs.. Not for German Shepherds!
My dog loved it.. Problem is, my dog is a 45kg German Shepherd, and he doesn't actually engage with the toy, he just pulls it apart 😅 The red boxes, the lids pull off really easily, and I worry that he'll swallow them, so this toys need EXTREMELY close supervision, which is why sturdiness is only two stars. That said, they do snap back on, hence durability is three stars, but the plastic is very thin and even mild chewing would warp and destroy the moving parts. I think it's a great toy for smaller, or more gentle dogs.. But if you have a big brute like I do, there are better, sturdier options for puzzle toys!

Perfect for waffle
Bought this for our cocker spaniel, Waffle, because he’s a clever little thing (sometimes too clever for his own good!) and I needed something to keep his brain busy. This puzzle toy has been brilliant. It’s a Level 2, which is just right gives him a challenge without him giving me the side eye and sulking. The first go was hilarious instead of sliding the bits like he was supposed to, Waffle tried to flip the whole thing over with his paw, as if to say, “Forget this puzzle business, just give me the treats!” Once he realised it didn’t work, he actually sat, studied it for a second, then started nudging the parts with his nose and paw. You could almost see the lightbulb moment when the treats appeared. Now he gets so excited when I pull it out, tail wagging like a propeller. It’s sturdy, easy to wipe down (because drool… lots of drool), and keeps him occupied far longer than his usual toys. What I really like is how proud he looks once he’s cracked it he actually prances around the kitchen like he’s solved world peace. If you’ve got a dog that gets bored easily or just loves a challenge, I’d say this is a winner. Watching them figure it out is half the fun and in Waffle’s case, the comedy show is free too.

My dog really really enjoys this. It is the right balance of fun and engagement without being frustrating (my dog gives up on the Kong wobbler but goes all the way to finish this puzzle). I understand the negative reviews here about choking hazards, plastic pieces breaking up, the toy cannot be left unsupervised etc... but it is unfair to rate this puzzle in that way. You ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO supervise this puzzle like a hawk and teach your dog the main objective of the game, which is to get the treats, not chew up the loose pieces. On my dog’s first try, he flipped the loose bone and took off with it immediately. We took the loose piece away and led him back to the puzzle. On the second try, he snapped the red caps and started chewing on it. We immediately intervened and brought his attention back to the puzzle. Now he gets, but we still standby to remove any loose pieces so his attention doesn’t wander to them. This is a 5 star toy if you know how to direct you dog the right way. It needs constant supervision. The loose pieces have to be removed immediately once they have served their purposes. It makes my dog’s meals super fun.

Nice as delayed food dispenser while stimulating dog to think and be creative. BUT, my dog pulled, chew, kicked and tore the lids of the compartments at very first use! Essentially destroyed the toy. I managed to put it back together and snap the covers back in place. But the plastic is a bit flimsy so I don't know how long it will last.

It's fun to see the progress of our dog from when she first used it. Her first strategy was stomping and kicking it to open the boxes and sliders, after a try or 3 she's pro at opening all the compartments. Even does it from top to bottom in neat rows. Even though she figured the puzzle out by now, we still use this on a daily basis because it's a fun game for our dog and makes her work for her food. The box mentions supervising your dog while using it. We can attest to that. Once our dog is done eating she will chew the plastic and try to take the individual pieces out to use as a chew toy somewhere else. So we take the toy away to prevent problems. If I had to name one con: the cleaning is done by hand (box doesn't mention that it's dishwasher safe). The dog licks the food out so it's a bit wet from her drool once she's done eating. We wash it with warm water, soap and sometimes a bit of vinegar, you do have to scrub the individual compartments to really clean it and it takes a while to dry. This is a very minor con in my opinion. We love this toy for our dog.
